<emanhattan> i remember pingu ice cream

sonic can work just fine in 3d. the problem is that they never stick to the winning formula and focus too much on retarded stories and side characters.

if you play the sonic-only levels in sonic unleashed you'll see they've fixed the camera problems and successfully mixed 2d and 3d sonic action. but the rest of the game is bullshit.

are you sure about that

whoops, i meant to say more realistic, not better. But yeah, i can't think of a single xbox/ps3/wii game that has levels as creative as the old sonic games, aside from maybe Nights for the wii (which i think was even made by the sonic team, wasn't it?)

Quote from: rtilyou don't need facts to call bullshit - just watch the damn video. it's nothing but smoke and mirrors. yes they're using point cloud data and voxels but it's not impressive and it's not "unlimited"
forming an opinion without facts is dangerous

the running stages in sonic unleashed are completely horrendous. it's not like sonic adventure, the camera is NOT good and you can't ever tell if you're going to land on a platform because the game has weird ass dimensions. the control and jump are also really fucking rigid.

here's a fact-  if this technology was useful to game animators they'd be all over it by now. but guess what - we're still using tris and hitboxes and it works fine. maybe ten, twenty years down the line a game could be made entirely with point-clouds and voxels but it would take the same or more processing power to do it. i've spent the past 5 years of my life around game animators and artists and none of them ever bothered with this stuff. we have a pipeline and it works, aka if it aint broke don't fix it

thank you for explaining to me that game animators and artists don't bother with this stuff. obviously this is revolutionary news that i would never have realized without your insider scoop. the fact that this might not be useful to anyone right now is truly irrelevant.

i understand that you will argue to the death about anything, but the possibility exists that it is not full of shit. naturally i am not at all convinced by the video and suspect that it is just a viral attention scam, but that does not mean that it is safe to write it off as bullshit when no information related to the implementation or theory has been released.

edit: i don't disagree with most of what you're saying, just that it may be a new legitimate rendering technique, however unlikely. that's all i'm saiyan.

If you are fucking on a crocadile, 27% of the time that same crocodile will bite your asshole off and prevent you from shiiting for the rest of your life. He'll just rip your asshole clean from your ass and in 7 days you will die from non shitting.

it is useful for some things, especially things that don't move. but it would be nearly impossible/frustrating as fuck to use this for game animation and collision detection. my point is that it's so trivial it makes no sense to develop the technology to reach that point. i don't think it would save processing time, speed up game production or make a game any more immersive.

the reason the video is bullshit is because it's using a pre-existing octree/voxel engine. this isn't anything new, and it certainly isn't unlimited.

if only they made sonic levels as creative as these. the only ones that come close are some of the final sonic adventure levels on 1 and 2
On a brighter note, some of the later levels in Sonic 4 look creative.

The side characters wouldn't be such a problem if they were designed to be much more fun but yeah, I agree for the most part.

sonic is gay i suck his dcick

Even with the absolutely shitty camera problems, sonic adventure/2/2006 were fun on the sonic stages, but the designers felt the need to mar the experience with shitty open world sections in sonic adventure and 2006, and sonic adventure 2 with tails and knuckles stages.

yesss i can agree with this

but you know what? even with all their problems I liked the tailes/eggman robots levels, to a degree. and the multiplayer was fun for a while.

that game had everything it needed to work, multiple kinds of gameplay, many playable characters, and a decent variety of levels and environments. All that it needed was for the team to put a bit more tought on the fuckin camera and nitpick the gameplay a bit

its was simply a lack of tought on why did players like the original sonic games in the first place. the sonic/shadow levels in sonic adv. 2 are actually playable and you can actually finish them without slowing down and they are still pretty lenghty and fun. the robot levels would be fun with more enemies and less "mazes" and shit. I remember there were some fucking horrible level designs in the robot levels. BUT that doesnt mean they could not work, or were devoid of all fun.

the knuckles levels were a pendulum between lots of fun and exploration, and totally fucking frustrating because the camera is not on your side.

lenko

i liked the robotnik levels in adventure 2, they just didnt fit into a sonic game well

yeah i mean who really wants to walk around in a lumbering robot when you can play as sonic

put

rtil you shouldnt care that much about this, you dont even play that much videogames and I dont think this was made for things to look more realistic as it is for looking more detailed, and I think they try to explain how they use so little processing power by saying they only show the dots that are currently on screen meaning that if you have a 1600x1200 screen it just processes those pixelswich is like an ultimate optimization, anyways I will wait and see.
Also this demonstration reminded me of the myst games, I always wondered how they would look if they were real time.

rtil

it's not about playing video games, it's about making them. i spent 4 years learning how to do the creative side of them, and myself and all my friends are in the game business.

billy

ya put shut ur piehole

billy

btw my friend got a job testing for bugs at bethesda softworks.... LOL

that's like getting a job documenting sand in a desert!! or dick in my mouth

rtil

so many people get into game testing thinking it's going to be so much fun playing video games all day

then they find themselves doing the same thing for 8 hours in slightly different ways and want to kill themselves after the first week
