I don't think video games are an artform...so far none have withstood the test of time as a contribution to the humanities. But we will see in the future if its possible.

yeah videogames are definitely art

they're creating something based off of an artistic thought or notion through creative means

whether or not it's good art or bad art depends on what game it is

traditional games are pretty much nothing but a sequence of rules. video games have not been around long enough to contribute to the humanities but every once in a while there are small glimpses of what could be.

I think that video games are indeed a form of art.
Nowadays, they've become a mixture of many different forms of art like visual, programming, music, writing, and so on.
I think video games are playable without some of these forms however, like music and writing.
You don't need writer to come up with an in-depth story for Mario to be able to enjoy it, but both music and writing as additional factors can enhance the enjoyment of the game

Visual - people use their arms to paint, sculpt, draw and animate. This also applies to cooking and home decoratingesfrdgtrdf
Audio - I use my arms to move a mouse around FL Studio and click a buncha blocks around and make something that's able to listen to
Writing - try writing a story with your toes/mouth/hair/diq
Programming - Ha. I consider this an art because as a programmer, I've seen bad code, but as a gamer, I've felt sluggish controls and the like.
Martial Arts (and Dance) - It's even in the name. There is considerable appreciation for how well a person(s) can move (and pwn a n00b)
Theatre/Cinematic - Movieeeees :] It's another one of those forms that require a collection of different forms of art.
Actors/Actresses (Performing Arts) - This does require the waving around of hands at times, but seriously you have to consider all of the people who can't act.

Basically I think art is how well you can put someone through something, as broad as that sounds.
Whether it's putting someone through earrape in a clusterfudge of sounds, having someone eat your cooking, reading a poem you wrote, whatev, it's defined by how well you can get someone to feel the way you wanted them to feel.
For vidya gaems, it's usually the feeling of "hey wow this was a pretty good game", and the addictiveness that has you coming back and playing (putting yourself through the excitement and rush of emotions) again (TF2, Pokemon, LoZ).

I think people like rogert ebert and the rest of the bunch who dont aknowledge videogames as an artistic endeavior probably think videogames as something any idiot with a few brain cells and a computer can do and that youre going to sell a million copies of your shitty game because gamers are idiots and will enjoy it anyways
