Well, i can certainly help you there!

Anime:
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, this is a great anime about ESPer (people with psychic abilities) and stuff. It surely has some boring episodes, but which show doesn't. The concept, to me at least, is pretty great. It's a spinoff of To Aru Majutsu no Index. (Last episode ain't out yet, it will be released on the 19th of March and then it will probably take 2-3 days to sub it)

To Aru Majutsu no Index, this is the original series that Railgun is from. I don't reccomend you to watch the first few episodes. Go watch the following: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19 and 20. Unless you like magic. If you do like magic, you can watch the whole thing. I thought it was a bit boring because I'm not a huge fan of magic.

Death Note, i don't think this one needs an explanation and I'm sure you've seen it already since it's pretty popular.

Serial Experiments Lain, a rather unknown anime from 1999 (i think). It's about a girl who has a split personality. I could explain that anime to you in great detail and spoil everything, and you'd still enjoy watching it. I don't know why but that's what the anime is like. It's about computer shit, some techno-drug, god, philosophy and all that.

Rosario + Vampire and Rosario + Vampire Capu2, it's about monsters, vampires and other supernatural shit. A highschool boy with no abilities whatsoever accidentally joins a college for monsters and supernatural beings (Capu2 is season 2).

Rozen Maiden, it's been a pretty long time since I've seen this one but from what i remember it was quite original. Puppets that come to live and have to fight to death.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, probably almost as wide spread and well known as Death Note, yet, it's pretty original and has a great art style going on, very detailed. The story is pretty damn good, too. I don't want to spoil anything but it centers around a highschool girl who is bored with life so she is trying to find ESPer, Aliens and Time Travelers, and sure enough, she finds them without even knowing.

Movies:
Team America - World Police, a film by the creators of South Park. Pretty damn good and one of my all time favorites.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spottless Mind, amazing film with Jim Carrey, who plays a character that wants to forget someone, but when he is forced to forget her (he signed up for a new procedure that erases memories) he realizes that he doesn't want to forget about that person and tries to manipulate the procedure from within his dreams.

Man on the Moon, a great movie, once again with Jim Carrey. It's about Andy Kaufman, how he got popular and about his downfall and finally death.

The Ten, really funny movie, a must watch.

If you want some more movie recommendations, tell me, i've got a lot more in store, these are only the ones that aren't TOO popular or wide spread, but now i want to come to the shows that you should definitely watch.

Shows:

South Park, i probably don't have to mention that or explain it. The list doesn't contain all the episodes though.

House, probably one of the only live-action shows that i like that isn't sketch comedy or comedy based.

Whitest Kids U Know, the best sketch comedy show i've seen in a long time. Great and original jokes.

Stella, another amazing show. This one isn't really a sketch comedy show with a lot of unrelated clips, it's more like a sketch comedy show that follows a basic storyline.

monster (drama and thriller. boring at first [well i'm not sure how boring it is since i read it before i watched it] but it picks up quickly)
