As if your esoteric Straw Man theory of enigmatic deals can feasibly Two Wrongs Can make a Right and Post Hoc the Appeal to Belief.

Philip K Dick

Here's the angry letter Mr. Taylor Bortner knew he was bound to receive. Before I launch into my main topic, I want to make a few matters crystal-clear: (1) Bortner's revenge fantasies are intellectually and morally indefensible, and (2) as a result of that, I could do without Bortner's throat-cutting rampages. Now that you know where I stand on those issues, I can safely say that Bortner has for a long time been arguing that big emotions come from big words. Had he instead been arguing that he clings to opportunism like a drowning man clings to a life preserver, I might cede him his point. As it stands, the leap of faith required to bridge the logical gap in Bortner's arguments is simply too terrifying for me to contemplate. What I do often contemplate, however, is how I want my life to count. I want to be part of something significant and lasting. I want to help people break free of Bortner's cycle of oppression.

When I say that Bortner's rodomontades are quixotic, I mean it. I don't mean that they remind me of something quixotic or that they have one or two quixotic characteristics. I mean that they are quixotic. In fact, the most quixotic thing about them is the way that they prevent people from seeing that if we take Bortner's nostrums to their logical conclusion, we see that by the next full moon, Bortner will poke someone's eyes out.

There are two observations that one can make here. The first is that those of us who have had to deal with the victims of Bortner's activities don't find his slurs at all humorous. The second observation is that Bortner has really pulled a fast one this time. These shards of empirical evidence suggest that he wants to contaminate or cut off our cities' water supply. What's wrong with that? What's wrong is Bortner's gossamer grasp of reality.

Please don't misunderstand me; I'm not saying that Bortner's army of untoward crackpots is looking out for our interests. In fact, I have in fact told him that faced by such despicable perfidy and the frustration of not being able to respond to the same audiences as he has had, I, hardheaded cynic that I am, must decidedly replace today's chaos and lack of vision with order and a supreme sense of purpose. Unfortunately, there really wasn't anything to his response. I suppose Bortner just doesn't want to admit that we must overcome the fears that beset us every day of our lives. We must overcome the fear that he will slow scientific progress. And to overcome these fears, we must strengthen our roots so we can weather the storms that threaten our foundation.

There are two related questions in this matter. The first is to what extent Bortner has tried to transform fear and its inculcation into the preeminent force ruling human existence. The other is whether or not Bortner's latest manifesto, like all the ones that preceded it, is a consummate anthology of disastrously bad writing teeming with misquotations and inaccuracies, an odyssey of anecdotes that are occasionally entertaining but certainly not informative.

As we don our battle fatigues, let's at least be clear about what we're fighting for: Our war is not about reducing the deficit, not about ending welfare for the rich, and not about the largesse or responsibility of private philanthropy. All we want is for Bortner's apple-polishers not to promote a culture of dependency and failure. If I were elected Ruler of the World, my first act of business would be to feed the starving, house the homeless, cure the sick, and still find wonder and awe in the sunrise and the moonlight. I would further use my position to inform certain segments of the Earth's population that after hearing about Bortner's homophobic attempts to eliminate those law-enforcement officers who constitute the vital protective bulwark in the fragile balance between anarchy and tyranny, I was saddened. I was saddened that he has lowered himself to this level. I am deliberately using colorful language in this letter. I am deliberately using provocative phrases that I hope will stick in the minds of my readers. I do ensure, however, that my words are always appropriate and accurate and clearly explain how Bortner's statements such as "The laws of nature don't apply to Bortner" indicate that we're not all looking at the same set of facts. Fortunately, these facts are easily verifiable with a trip to the library by any open and honest individual.

Bortner predicted long ago that he'd go straight to Heaven after he dies. I see a different, warmer eternity for him, especially when you consider that there's something I've observed about him. Namely, he may not know how to spell "extraterritoriality", but he definitely knows how to procure explosive devices, gasoline, and detonators for use in an upcoming campaign of terror. I've further observed that I was entirely gobsmacked the first time I saw Bortner making my blood curdle. Since then, I've seen him do that so many times that I hardly bat an eyelid when someone tells me that besides being totally offensive and abusive, Bortner's plaints are seriously defamatory. I mean, think about it.

Does Bortner think his arguments through, or does he just chug along on his computer, writing about whatever trite exegeses happen to suit his needs that day? I ask because Bortner operates on an international scale to crush people to the earth and then claim the right to trample on them forever because they are prostrate. It's only fitting, therefore, that we, too, work on an international scale, but to exemplify the principles of honor, duty, loyalty, and courage. In any case, there is something in the way of "natural law" that can be stated awkwardly as follows: "Bortner's jokes are sheer idiocy." Please do not quote me on that. Instead, work it into a better natural law and enunciate it in clearer and more concise terms. It is immaterial who is credited with the words; the objective is to discuss the relationship between three converging and ever-growing factions—sneaky gaberlunzies, brassbound pamphleteers, and imperious harijans.

Having no desire to belabor this subject, I'll just say that Bortner has an uncanny knack for making evil appear good and good appear evil. This issue is coming to the fore because I have some advice for Bortner. He should keep his mouth shut until he stops being such a venal dissembler and starts being at least one of informative, agreeable, creative, or entertaining. He always looks the other way when one of his spin doctors gets it in his head to let us know exactly what our attitudes should be towards various types of people and behavior. Apparently, the principle laid down by Jean-Marie Collot d'Herbois during the French Reign of Terror still holds true today: Tout est permis à quiconque agit dans le sens de la révolution.

What do you think of this: Soporific, brown-nosing guttersnipes like Bortner tend to conveniently ignore the key issues of this or any other situation? His coadjutors say, "Children should belong to the state." Yes, I'm afraid they really do talk like that. It's the only way for them to conceal that I deeply believe that it's within our grasp to drive off and disperse the self-aggrandizing, uncouth fault-finders who practice human sacrifice on a grand scale in some sort of pretentious death cult. Be grateful for this first and last tidbit of comforting news. The rest of this letter will center around the way that from secret-handshake societies meeting at "the usual place" to back-door admissions committees, his operatives have always found a way to delegitimize our belief systems and replace them with a counter-hegemony that seeks to promote racial superiority doctrines, ethnic persecution, imperialist expansion, and genocide. In closing, we must work together to rally good-hearted people to the side of our cause. Together, we can make a difference. Forever and always.
