FCC vs ISP's

basically, the FCC wants to put forward this bill into law that would force the major ISP's in America (of which there are not very many) to not purposely limit internet speeds and access based on prices. this would expand internet infrastucture throughout the US and make high-speed cable internet readily available to everyone.

however, the cable companies protest this will hamper their profits (like anyone gives a shit) and will actually slow down the internet because forced expansion will put stress on the existing pipelines.

but as much as i am a libertarian, i do believe one of the government's roles is to keep corporate monopolies from power, and we can clearly see the way the internet business works is already so much like the television industry, which is dominated by a few powerful men that branch out to nearly every network.

so, in this case, i am on the FCC's side, and i believe that they should be putting controls on companies like comcast and verizon and making sure they use their wide profit margins for helping their customers instead of fattening their CEO's bonus checks.

remember, most americans still have DSL and dial-up, which is still very expensive.

of course I agree. internet providers are internet providers. they exist to move bits around. now if they want to distinguish themselves they can either have good services and good support (which nobody does these days) or add extra features (like aol tried to do back in the day)

unfortunately some people (especially the washington times) are trying to frame this as "should the FCC regulate the internet" and not "should the FCC regulate cable internet providers"
