ok i just finished making a black line drawing in photoshop, and now i want to change the color of the lines so that they sorta match the colors im using to color the piece in. i tried a million different things to make the lines a different color but nothing is giving me the results i want.

i first tried selecting the lines with the magic wand tool and then coloring it in with the paint bucket tool, but that made the lines all fuzzy and ugly looking.
i also tried messing with the exposure, and was able to turn the lines to a light shade of gray, but i can't figure out how to fully change the color without it looking pixelated and terrible, and i can't change the hue/saturation

im not really experienced with photoshop, so im sorry if this is a really dumb question!!

i had this problem too, i tried hue/saturation but that also didnt work

i ended up redrawing the lines which i didnt like!!!

there are 2 ways to change the color of the lines. if you just want 1 solid color to replace the current one, do this. double-click the layer, and now you should be in the effects window. check "color overlay", then select the color you want to use.

if you'd rather paint over it, open the layers window and select the layer you want to paint over. on the top or bottom (depends on the version) of the layers window there are 4 buttons. they look like a square, a paintbrush, the move symbol and the lock symbol in that order. press the square. this is "lock transparency" mode. now, when you paint over the layer, it will only paint where you previously have, maintaining the linework completely. this is good if you want to "colorize" different parts of the linework.

Yeah color overlay can have really bad results. It ends up giving shit a jagged edge.

but like rtil said, locking the transparency and brushing over it would do the trick.

if i had that problem i would've tried to turn the linework into a mask and color it that way, if you know what i mean

sorry for bumping this thread, i got another problem

i drew my picture on the background layer and when i clicked the button to create a new layer, all of the linework suddenly turned green and pink. Im not sure if perhaps i pressed a button on my tablet accidentally, or i clicked another button by mistake, but i cant figure out how to reverse this.

the lines that are green are lines that i thought i had erased, and the pink lines are my current linework i think. i dont want to take a screenshot because this is my drawing for the villain contest. has anyone encountered this issue before?

EDIT: nevermind i fixed the problem, turns out im just retarded
