this isnt really about flash but
i really really hate drawing
like i dont know how this happened
every time i draw anything i absolutely hate the result
like i guess i set my standards too high or something
i get away with drawing like 3 stupid monster things a year that end up on my sheezyart
those are the only things im satisfied with
i draw every day and i only get that many i like per year
i really want to quit drawing altogether because all it brings me is frustration
i cant draw because im not good enough and i get mad at myself which makes it so i cant improve
i try over and over again to draw people and i hate the style i draw them in
i throw away tons of pages of failed work
i dont really know what im trying to ask for here
does anyone else ever get really frustrated when drawing?
does anyone have a way of getting over that?
i guess im in a kind of slump or something. does anyone have a way of getting out of those?
i just want something to make drawing fun again

bcube

I really have no idea.
I just draw even when i hate to draw and eventually get over it.

its been like 3 years and i havent gotten over it      but i dont know

Jeinu

maybe try separating yourself from drawing for a bit, maybe even a few days. go watch some movies or cartoons or something that might give you inspiration. if drawing everyday isn't working, try to stay off it for a while. worth a try at least.

yeah i used to get frustrated a lot because i hated my style and always compared myself to other artists. i got pissed because i thought that i would never improve no matter how much i tried. what really helped was showing my art to a couple people and getting their advice/criticism. their advice was always really helpful. art classes might be good too

In my angst ridden years as a prepubescent little shit (14-16) I would constantly get really fucking pissed @ myself because I would see all these other artists who were better than me. I would usually make myself feel better by saying "oh they're 23 years old and have been to college and shit for that."

but then I developed a theory instead of just a way out.

To draw well; one:

-must follow and know the fundamentals.

-must have decent anatomical knowledge.

-must set aside specific practices for drawing certain things, hands, feet, faces, emotions...practice that focuses on a certain aspect of drawing is 10X better for you than drawing a whole picture and implementing everything.

-must know how to reference. If there is inadequate knowledge existing in one's brain on how to draw a certain something...research it! "fuck I can't draw eyes the way I like, yet I can't just come up with new ones." Go look at your favorite artist and see how they draw eyes. Implement them into your work, and soon they will begin to look more like yours than the original artist's. Don't blatantly rip them off or anything, just REFERENCE.

-must have patience and know that improvement doesn't come over a short period of time (usually.) it comes gradually with each sheet of paper dedicated to your selected subject.

I haven't really started practicing anything in particular yet, but because I stuck with it my art is better, check these out:

Jun 30th, 2009:

A much better female, though there are still some pretty apparent flaws in my work, I just keep studying female anatomy and posing to improve. Now mind you I didn't spend two years focusing on females, I just kept drawing. If I would have dedicated more of my drawing to to female studies, I'd be better.

tl;dr

STICK WITH IT. PRACTICE ISOLATED DRAWING EXERCISES, HAVE FUN.

i love you, squef

when I don't feel like drawing, I just don't do it. sometimes I go for a few days without ever touching pen to paper and honestly I'm OK with that, i just don't see the point of drawing if I don't want to do it, i dunno mang, that doesn't really help you though

Way to take it out of context (s)queef.

You'd rather have him improve just by making shitty flashes consisting of looping movieclips and grainy photoshop filters set to greasy rock tracks from the 90's?

I was just trying to tell him I could relate and throw out some inspiration on how a lot of artists go through this. If you want to be a cock-smoking cunt rag about it be my guest. I made my point so there's no reason for me to argue.

to OP: if you really want to improve, read the .pdf "how to be creative" by Hugh Macleod. It'll do a better job than (s)queefer or I ever could.

kian i feel the exact same way almost all the time. i never finish any of my artwork because i always see a minute flaw then get mad and give up. fuck perfectionism, it has derailed way too many of my projects

you can never let this crushing self doubt get to you, even though it will make you want to rip up anything you\\\'ve ever drawn. you are always your own worst critic, so asking other artists whose opinions you care about (NOT online) can really help motivate you. ive found that really good art teachers or mentors can be the perfect way to go from hating your own art to being encouraged to push ahead. also the animator\\\'s survival guide is like richard williams directly telling you to stop being such a lazy insecure prick and just start drawing, which is definitely something every animator needs to hear.

like sqf i also disagree with lalios... sure its important to study anatomy and draw different things in reality until you figure out the best way to represent them through your art. but if the end result is generic anime crap like he showed... well... you\\\'ve just wasted a whole fuckload of time and effort. sure its detailed and [sort of] realistic, but its not visually distinct and it lacks character. id rather look at those monsters you draw any day.

also bear in mind that you don\\\'t have to be limited to character animation. with your photoshop skills and whatnot you could be a great graphic designer.
I have more of a life writing this review at 1145 pm than you guys do making these movies. . .
