And it sucks. I don't know about you guys, but personally I HATE the current state of 3D movies. And no, I'm not talking about 3D animation like Pixar and Dreamworks, I'm talking about the movies that require you to wear glasses with polarized lenses so that the pictures pop out of the screen (barely).

Anyway, I went to go see up on the 29th, and I was greatly disappointed when I found out that the person who bought the tickets failed to realize that they had bought tickets to see "UP" in 3D. First of all my major gripe is the glasses. I cannot stand wearing glasses, and I always find them extremely irritating. They bothered me so much that I just gave up halfway through the movie and stopped wearing them entirely. Sure, some brief moments looked stupid without the glasses, but overall I feel that UP wasn't designed to be watched in 3D, and because of that most of the movie was watchable without the stupid glasses.

Also, the 3D effect was no more immersive, or entertaining than watching the movie in 2D. Don't get me wrong, 3D still seems like a cool idea to me, but I hate the way it's been implemented into current movies. First we have the terrible, terrible, just awful red/blue 3D glasses, followed by the slightly better polarized lenses. I've seen some other 3D technology recently, but the one I find most promising by far is this. No glasses required, so you can just sit back and watch like you normally would, with the same 3D effect.

Now, at the same time, 3D right now is extremely gimmicky, and just because you can doesn't mean you should make all of your movies 3D. Where it really gets bad is when people stop worrying about the content, and start focusing on how they could abuse the 3D effect best.

Now, with that said, I still think UP was a great movie, in fact it was so good that I went to see it a second time on Sunday in 2D, but the whole 3D effect really bothered me the first time I fully watched the movie, and made it a much worse experience than it could have been. Once again, and this is directed towards Disney especially, just because you can, doesn't mean you should make everything 3D. It really took away the feeling you get when you go to see a Pixar movie in theaters. Seeing Wall-E, although not as good of a movie as UP, was a FAR better experience in my opinion. The crowd was better, the feeling was better, the experience was better, and I think it all had to do with the fact that the movie wasn't being shown in 3D.

Also, if you haven't seen UP yet, do yourself a favor, and don't watch it in 3D, watch it the way it was meant to be seen.

i don't mind the glasses or the effect

i also thought it made coraline "better", it really brought the sets to life. they didn't treat it as a gimmick at all in that film, except maybe one scene in the opening credits where the needle comes straight at you.  other than that i thought they used it wisely

i watched monsters vs. aliens in the non-3d version and it was still nice

yeah, anyways i don\\\'t watch cg movies for supreme artistic merits or anything like that. to tell the truth i\\\'m usually bored as hell at cg movies because they seem to always always ALWAYS cater to kids and family (even wall-e i know you guys love the shit out of that movie and bless you guys but damn there was so much silly fun for kids/boring for me slapstick in the last half of the movie that i wanted to shoot myself). anyways, my point is i appreciate anything to make the movie more exciting (and believe me, shit flying at my eyeballs is exciting).

but paying 5 extra bucks sucks

rtil

i only payed an extra dollar for the glasses at coraline, not 5

billy

it usually costs me $3 extra

making the tickets $15 each

normally $12

and you can only get a $1 student discount on thursday. wtf why thursday, because students go to class on friday so the theater doesnt have to give a student discount as often?

3D is kind of cool I guess but when I wear 3D glasses, I get dizzy.

LordZeebmork

let's all set our phasers on "boring"

for somethings its 100% gimmick. its a gimmick in hopes that it will be something worth paying for to cut back on pirating. although there is stuff like that monitor app that makes Left 4 Dead 3D so we might all have bootlegged 3D Coralines anyways

ZekeySpaceyLizard

its a good thing you made a rant about something everyone hates
it shows you are unique

Greenkitten

I cant see 3D so it really shits me when I sneak into a movie and expect to see something good it just shows some 3D shit.
