Anyone have any tips for using oil paints? I'm completely clueless. Do I mix the linseed oil on the canvass or on the palette? Why do the oil paints seem like they are destroying my brushes? etc.

You need rapeseed oil.

oil is an expensive investment. you need to use brushes made for oils, thick bristles. cleaning oil paints off your brushes when you're done is critical. this is usually done with chemicals that are pretty offensive (aka turpentine or paint thinner), so you'll want to clean them in an open air place. you can mix the paints anywhere you like. personally i find oils too time consuming , i just don't have enough time or foresight to make an oil painting let alone a good one.

I enjoy working with acrylic

i hate how fast acrylic dries. you can't really blend or layer colors. i like watercolors the best

I only ever did oil painting when the school was paying or the materials. I think it's best to use the linseed oil on the palette so you can get your colors and consistency right before commiting it to the canvas.

last summer I scored a job painting a mural with oils
It was the first time I'd used them and it was... not BAD, but messy and difficult. I smelled the turpentine on my fingers for days

but you can layer, wash and dry brush plus get texture. watercolors are great too.

as far as oils...get some cheap turps. don't bother with a knife the first time. prepare to fuck up
