this semester we've been learning to 3d model, and i can safely tell you this is by far my least favorite artistic medium. everything is so stiff and rigid, buttons everywhere. the lighting is terrible. you try to model something organic and it ends up looking too mechanical, you try to model something mechanical and it ends up looking to organic. i can't stand it. i would prefer hand drawing every frame then having a 3d modeling program do most of the work for me. nothing can beat a hand-drawn line over a mathematically generated one. what about you?

I have been working on 3D abstract for about a week now. 3D models for years but stopped about two years ago, when an annoying hacker wanted to ruin and destroy my Harddrive whenever I got it fixed and made an awesome 3D model. You'd be tired too if he made it so the only way to bring your computer back was to reformat it, especially 5 times in a year just when you started reinstalling, learning, and starting to make. I have done a bit of drawing, particularly 2 point perception. Now for me it depends. When it comes to a person by all means I will vote for traditional, the human soul has been working on trying to capture the beauty and exteme detail of the human body for centuries. While the computer and modeling is fairly recent, we can not yet capture the human without tons more work than drawing, I think HL2 captured humans fairly well but nonetheless that is merly an exception to the rule. So traditional has won this round.
Now, cities can go either way. I have attempted to make maps for games and must say it is very fun because it looks nice, set up a nice camera angle, take a screen and if it looks pretty good it will be cool! But I would only do this for specifically game moding programs with an HL2 engine or Doom 3 engine render. However, looking at some of RTIL's as well as other artists drawings of cities it looks pretty nice and with 2 point perception it gives that nice 3D effect. So this round is a draw.
Finally, Abstract. I will have to hand this one to 3D modeling programs. I have seen a fair share of abstract works drawn by hand, I am in no way stating I am an expert as I am the farthest thing from it, but I know I would rather have a 3D abstract render on my desktop than an abstract peice of art. I also, find 3D modeling to be easier and have more satisfying results. Look at the picture of my first day of working with 3D abstract...

You can then edit it with photoshop

Well this is my take on 3D and Traditional, but ultimatly I am not gifted with actual traditional drawing, but when it comes to digital or 3D I feel that it looks loads better. I would love to draw Traditionally and am working on it, but my talents as of now are definitly with digital for now. I guess it just requires the right thought patterns and the right touch, a different type of touch for each thing.
Also, as far as 3D modeling goes it really depends on the program you are using. Programs I have used for years:
Worldcraft -Good for making cities and specifically modding the Half-Life/Counterstrike games
Milkshape 3D - Awesome computer model program

Programs just found and recommended:
Bryce 5: In my opinion extremely hard for models due to the fact you can only choose basic shapes and can do little to change them easily, it's much more of a hassle then it needs to be. But excellent for abstract.

C4D/Cinema 4D- Great for models, pretty good for abstract and just overall easy interface.

Programs I do not recommend:
Blender- Many people like it and say it is good. I have used it, and while it may be nice the interface is very confusing and annoying for n00bies, prepare to read up on alot of tutorials to familiarize yourself with it. If you have the time to spend learning how to use the program, I have heard it is worth it. But I like Milkshape 3D better. C4D is also an excellent alternative.

And with that I will finally shutup

if by better you mean cleaner, then yes. a render is essentially a series of mathematical equations designed to mock what you created in the program to the tee. even the most anal architecturally gifted artist couldn't compare to a computer render. as far as 3d 'abstract' goes, they all look relatively similar to me. polygons protruding in random directions with shiney colors and no real sense of form or composition. i wouldn't know how to make them, but i imagine to a certain extent it is relatively simple since they involve primitives.

since i tend to prefer street art and a more freeform style i like imperfections and rougher artwork. you really can't beat a hand-drawn sketch when it comes to getting the predominant statement about one thing or another. art is all about making a statement about what it is you're drawing. it's never about mocking reality. if it was, you might as well stick to taking photographs of everything.

I prefer 2D animation as well, though 2D with the aid of 3D doesn't bother me (Futurama). I just like the styles done with 2D better and they tend to have a better flow than the 3D animation I've seen.

I also hate how most of 3D animation you see uses more realistic lighting. They never seem to try anything more creative than that.

Good point, but ultimatly that is down to taste (oppinion). I never said you could beat a hand drawn sketch, I said I like handdrawn when used on people and I will stand firm that I do not like abstract drawn, I prefer 3D. However, as stated hand drawn just seems to capture more. However, you make some nice points.

3d but i just like video games to much
Little people. I see you yawning.
Listen close to what I say.
Little people. Heed my warning.
Little people. Be afraid.

2d sidescrollers are the roots and dominant history of the videogame industry.

2d all the way. I am starting to hate all the 3d animation movies...

Trad -

basically the start of all animation
is allowed by paper AND computer
the fact that 2D graphics in video gaming and other medias were the first of their kind
unlimited possibility
you can PRACTICE and LEARN it unlike 3D where you pick it up in a week and never use it again

3D -

expensive piece of shit
useful in some situations like when pulling off something that yer too lazy to do in trad like a faggot does
YEAH its the most high tech so fucking what? it might look easier on the eyes now but it has its limits
difficult to run
gay
ass
fag
shit

my point is

fuck you 3D you fucking fuck fucker
