what really gets me is the fact that the top 50, as pointless of a populatrity contest as it has become in recent years, used to actually mean something. NOTHING used to break the 4.2 mark unless it was professional quality or adam phillips. now, everything on the frontpage is 4.4+. if thats not imbalance, i don't know what is

thats not at all what i was saying, what i meant was people just used to be more bitter and less forgiving. they would even blam actual good quality shit, there were never any free protection points. it was like the opposite extreme of what it is now.

the site has always has problems but i think you'll agree since the redesign, things have got worse fanbase-wise

I agree that NG used to be better - mainly because the 4.2 thing was totally true, especially the part about Adam Phillips - I just think that a site with such immense popularity won't ever have a majority of smart users.
