ok so i have an experimental film class that im taking this quarter. there are really no limitations to what we can do except that it must be shot in live action at least partially... it can have animation, but it cant ONLY be an animation. im having some trouble coming up with ideas but i know it will involve a combination of live action and stop motion animation. i will have a cinematographer, set designers, animators, etc from within the class helping me out on the project so i can take it as far as i want... it can be a crappy class project or it can be a festival worthy short, its whatever i make it.

so basically im wondering if you guys have any interesting ideas for a live action stop motion hybrid. for instance, inanimate objects that could be brought to life, claymation, weird effects like the one i got with the etch a sketch, etc.

one idea im running through my head right now is to use clay on my actor's faces or on a pane of glass over top of them in order to exaggerate their features... for instance, use white and black clay to make bug eyes, use red clay to make blood, use skin colored clay to make a bigger nose, etc.

if you guys have any good references for this type of thing, please link to the video in this thread. i remember one old live action stop motion hybrid where two men were sitting at a table eating dinner. after they finished, they proceeded to start eating the silverware, plates, table and finally each other

Are you able to use one of these green screens or blue boxes somewhere?

that sounds like the kind of thing jan svankmajer would do. you're probably familiar with him, but if you aren't maybe go look him up on youtube for some inspiration.

one question though, when you say stop-motion and live action hybrid, do you mean that your actors would act in stop motion? or would you only use it for special effects that would require it? Because i know that in a number of svankmajer's films, the actors movements are all acted out frame by frame, and it's great! You seem pretty ambitious about this, so i hope you do.

There was a film of that kind I remember seeing in Animation History class that involved a bunch of guys rigging up a falcon model with movable wings. They took hundreds of different photographs moving the falcon model every single time to make it look like it was in flight and flapping its wings.

One way of doing this is making the opposite of a rotoscope, where you could animate something and maybe try to stop-motion it in live-action. Just throwin' ideas out there.

Find a song that brings images to your head and animate to it.

good question, i could take more of a ray harryhausen approach or i could just do it all in stop motion. i figure it would be easier just to composite live action footage with stop motion rather than animate ALL of it in stop motion, including the actors. you'd need some very patient actors for that to work.

i remember another stop motion i saw, it might have been svankmajer but i cant remember. it was two arm chairs having sex on a roof... fuckin hilarious

just so you guys know i have access to private sound stages, HD cameras, stop motion programs, etc. i just need an idea that hasnt been done before. none of that bullshit unoriginal "people sliding around without walking" crap
