Im gonna see that one animation movie tonight at the cinema with a
bunch of friends : tekkon kinkreet.

It was hard for me to find the title they gave in US (cuz they translated it in france.) The movie has been out n France since May 2nd, but apparently,the american release date is April 25th. I dont know if any of you has seen it already, but I heard from Taiyō Matsumoto who made the manga the movie is based off a long time ago.

Taiyō Matsumoto was the first mangaka to get interested in european comics (such as Moebius 's work) , hence his style very different from the basic anime/manga thing.

The movie is a collaboration of a japanese studio and an american : Aniplex and Michael Arias worked together on this... well the wiki article will give you more infos

i'm not seeing a whole lot of european influence on his characters, but they certainly do look different. not appealing, but definitely different.

animation looks great. let me know if the film is any good.

lmao sorry bout that buddy but I got used to that term in english. thats how everyone calls the animated movies from japan, and I admit it's a bad. btw this style is totally unique

the backgrounds were SPLENDID and I LOVED the animation. I really loved the story as well, even though it didnt please my friends as much.
they HAD to admitt the backgrounds were crazy and gorgeous though.

the drawing style is peculiar, I loved it, but they didnt share my opinion so much...

the background art is what is catching my eye at the moment. i'm not saying the style is not unique. it is clearly influenced by styles outside of japan . however it looks really disjointed and unappealing, especially the top right picture you posted. i think it will be a while until anyone in japan develops a solid style outside of the regions of anime. i'd definitely prefer an actual american/european directing the art style of a film like this rather than someone inexperienced with the style , such as a japanese artist. it just doesn't make any sense, and i don't understand why it should be glorified.

i want to see the movie for the animation and the background art. not the style, which in my opinion is horrible. it reminds me of a step above the style of the film Aachi and Ssipak. i will go see it, though.

I wouldnt call it unexperienced : that dude has been drawing for all his life, and Im sure you know the lifestyle of a mangaka (they basically dont live, they only draw)

but I do agree that the style isnt attractive. I remember when the manga (books) was out in france, it's been awhile really something like 6 years ago if not more, and I had the same feeling as well : I just hated the drawings.
the animation made the drawings simpler though and they look "better" than the manga. (still in the author style though lol)

I guess it's all a matter of taste. I respect the style, and Ive actually came to love it. but a I said, it DOES NOT please everyone : my friends themselves didnt like how the characters were drawn ^^

I meant (and said) inexperienced with the style. Not as an artist. I'm sure he's an excellent draftsman.

So my Tekkon Kinkreet blu-ray came in the mail today and I just finished watching it. The animation was great, but the problem I had with it wasn't that I couldn't follow the plot, but just that it was completely unsatisfying. So many critics whined about how they couldn't figure out what was going on, but it wasn't very hard to follow at all. It just kind of lacked a satisfying conclusion because it was kind of like a bunch of little, loosely connected stories going on at once instead of one plot arch.

The movie started really strong though. It just got limp in the 3rd act.
