Sparsely populated small towns? There are plenty of those. Check out Middle America. Population in some of those towns don't even reach above 200.

There are far worse tragedies to speak of than the mass produced anime crap being sent out to plague every westerner's home, to entice their kids to buy a crapload of toys and merchandise.  What do we call that?  An impressive marketing strategy that deals with the fantasies (and oft times sick) lurking in everyday people's imaginations.

As for the tragic events that played out at 911?  While I do not wish to sound rude, I'm getting tired of hearing about it.  Sure, it was something to go to war about, but let's face it.  The US has lost more people and troops in Iraq than the police officers, fire fighters, and civilians combined on that fateful day.  And lest us not forget the Iraq civilian casualties.  Over 100,000?  Some informed estimates believe it's over 600,000.

Btw, for the record.  I despise most anime shows these days.  All I see now is the mainstream efforts of companies pushing out anime with a lack of artistic quality, in favour of computer generated scenes that killed the cel shading techniques that required more time.  But it was worth it.  The cel shading I mean.  The anime industry is getting slack for the most part; with the exception of a few gems here and there.  I only watched Steamboy for the first time, and the wow factor for detailed animation in that is quite impressive.  Gundam Seed on the other hand?  It's worse than a narcotic in the hands of a kid.  (Stock animation is the death knell of people caring for their work.)  At least Gundam Wing had better animation.  Even if the main characters were victimised, over the sad display of fangirls that ruined many people's views of them.

steamboy was well animated, but 10 years production time for a story that disjointed? not worth the wait. nice eye  candy, though. definitely a step above most anime films and series.

Rainier

Yup.  It's been a while since we've been treated to a good story too.  Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are great exceptions though.  As for a series, Last Exile sits nicely as my fav.  If only there was more like them, I might have more respect for the industry.

Dagolith

well that goes without saying, almost all anime movies have much higher quality than anime series. like NausicaƤ

The quality in animation is a lot more evident in movies, because they have larger funds to work with.  Unfortunately this does not always mean a better script and story writers, as Rtil pointed out about Steamboy.  Appleseed and Spriggan belong there too.  Sure they look flashy and have lots of explosions...  but the cheesy moments they throw in ruin the seriousness of the show.  Like when that chick is cheering on the rocket ship in VHD: Bloodlust.  Sad...

one thing that always stood out to me about spriggan that allows me to forgive some cheesy moments is the fact they didn't blatantly exploit women as sex symbols in the film. there was only one woman i could even remember in the movie, and she was dressed like anyone else in the film, and didn't act like a complete moron.

i didn't even know it was on television. never seen the series, but i've seen clips of the film and man was the animation incredible.

True.  Maybe there's something to be had there in Hayao Miyazaki's more renown accomplishments?

And you know... if only that weak ending in Spriggan didn't exist, I wouldn't have a single gripe against it.  Not only was it all 'ladeda, happiness for all', but I felt it was too rushed to enjoy.
