I have to agree with Taylor. The 40's AND 50's were a pretty good time for animation. Tom And Jerry (I think Hanna and Barbara's greatest work) was phenominal during the 40's era and 50's era, even with the racial shit that would later be redubbed to destroy a part of history by Turner Broadcasting Network.

A tale of two kitties (by Bob Campett) was made in 1942 and the timing and overall animation style that Clampett was so famous for, really shows in that toon. All the Merry Melodies were showing a transition in solid animation during the 40's. I think American Animation is really solid all around and depending on what you look for in a toon, you will always find something worth while and inspiring. That includes current animation.

Urgh, I did have a reply typed out, but when it came to submitting, FF went failure on me.

However, was I did put in it was an agreement. I haven't seen many 40s cartoons for a while, so they've been out of mind lately. The 40s did produce most of the best animations around, the animation style fluid and characters almost lifelike. However, I still feel like this quality continued to the 60s with Hanna-Barbara, and it wasn't until the late 60s that animation truely started going downhill in my eyes, when animations studios started watering down what was popular in order to make more money, rather than putting money into developing the style that the 40s had began.

And that is animation all over the world too. All these animation studios (INCLUDING THE ONES IN JAPAN) are watering down their style or simplifying things so they can make a quick buck. Japanese Anime is a big contender beceause their frames in animation drops from 20 frames to 2 frames per second and it really does come off as a half-assed project. American anime is the same too, where they've actually adopted styles from Japan to emulate the same effect, taking the bad habits with them.

But I always like to emphasize on the good protions of animation in our generation, it still exists. I think Animation is still pretty decent with art directors such as Brad Bird, Spike Brandt, Shinichiro Watanabe, and Hayao Miyazaki.. just naming peeps off the top of my head

cartoons have always been produced to make money so that is what they still are being made for the only thing that is changing is the taste of the public. The cartoons were great in the forties because they did not have the technology to produce at such a rate as today. Every single frame used had to be drawn and painted by hand so naturally it would look more impressive than these almost dead computer colored shows on tv now. But the only people you are going to find that would be interested in reliving the so called 'golden' years of animation are enthusiasts that are doing it for the sake of artistic presentation. We cant expect these big shot studios to work extensively on what is pretty much bubble gum shows made to get kids to buy toys, any business that can figure out a way to save money but still create a product is going to do it as cheaply as they can get away with.

some of todays kids almost wont even watch older cartoons, I cant get my little brother to sit through a disney musical or even a looney tune :s

but anyway, thats why I need to make an animation studio, whos with me?

mongoose made a good point that kids today can't sit through cartoon classics anymore, they need very hyperactive shows and movies to give their short attention spans justice. as time goes on people need more and more to be entertained, which serves a true challenge to animators today. that's why so many cartoons as of late have failed to be successful as not only are they uninteresting, but poorly written and ultimately more painful to watch than entertaining. as more and more things become cliche, it becomes harder to make a cartoon that catches the public eye.

as far as the american versus japanese animation, i feel none are superior to the other. each animation industry has their own strengths and weaknesses, and each could not survive without eachother.

well, it's not that i can't appreciate a well made cartoon, it's just that i don't really like cartoons to begin with, and the old old cartoons (30's, 40's) aren't really that good, yes they worked really hard on them, and it came out great a lot, but that was because they had to work really hard on them, there weren't any really good way of drawing cartoons, and no good equipment to do it on, so ya they made them vary painstakingly.

i find a lot of 30's cartoons to be far more engaging than some of what is made today with the aid of a lot of technology. whether or not you like it, it was the founding of american cartoons . a lot has been learned since then, though.
