ive always really wanted to be able to make a genuinely scary animation
but it seems like its impossible to make anything remotely freaky in flash

has anyone seen any animations that have actually scared them
or
does anyone have any ideas about what could be frightening in a flash

ZekeySpaceyLizard

closest I've seen to anything 'scary' would be granfaloon's halloween collab he did with two other animators from years ago.

or redmongoose's 'drink your milk'

but both of those are more in the "YOU'VE BEEN STARTLED" mode, as opposed to being horrifying.

there's a couple of animated horror films from europe and japan, but its really hard to make a cartoon scary.

FrozenSheep

You could be cheap and just make a screamer.

screamers are annoying

anyways
even though i dont think most scary things from horror movies can transfer over to flash animations
can anyone think of some scenes from movies that actually caused you to feel fear

Adam's hitchHiker series back then scared the shit out of me. I was like, 13 at the time though :P

i think translation isn't the way to go about it. i recently saw that French flick high Tension which was pretty freaky. while the general plot (which i won't spoil) could be transfered, the gore and characters would be way to overwhelming to try and accomplish in flash even if it were a team effort.

i think something like the end of Scream would be something you could do. like something dialog driven. but slasher-esque can't be transfered.

i'd say look at Firth being creepy and Adam Philips has two real startling ones and find a median.
fear and horror are hard because you can't fit everyones fears through a visual and aural medium
find something that makes you uncomfortable to even go to sleep like Freddy

bcube

I think that
the flash should be scary mostly on concept. Something that disturbs the people who watches it, not just gore or jumping at things that move

The tunnel from Willy Wonka.
Judge Doom when he killed the shoe. Oh god HE KILLED A CARTOON.
Large FUCKING Marge.

Then again, I saw these when I was like, 8 or something.

That movie was clearly supposed to be funny. No way the filmmakers though people would take it seriously.

Which ones? I certainly don't remember any.

I remember an awesome sweater and fedora and Rickny Depp being swallowed by a bed.

Wade is not gay, read his profile! It's sad that you would use sexual orientation as a joke, shows that you have no real sense of humor.

I remember playing this flash game where I was scared pretty much the whole time thought, even though at the end you realize that there was nothing really scary about the whole thing. So scary can be probably archived using music and environment in relation.

actually yeah i think i know which game you're talking about, i dont remember the name of it but i was legitimately scared of trying to finish it. it was one of those point and click horror games and the sound work was really well done, creeped me out until i beat it. i think games like silent hill are also really good at scaring the living shit out of you.

the movie that scared me the most is the shining. the most suspenseful would probably be silence of the lambs. most other horror films don't really scare me so much as they startle me. and even the ones most people are terrified of like the saw films or hostel arent scary to me at all for some reason
I have more of a life writing this review at 1145 pm than you guys do making these movies. . .

Philip K Dick

first time i watched hostel i thought it was really disturbing for me

i watched it again and it wasnt

also the saw films always entertained me but never scared me

when i was 14 the grudge scared the shit out of me but now its like the dorkiest shit ever

The shinning is probably one of the scariest I've seen, and most of that is due to its music and timing. Today's movies focus more on gore based terror. I found saw entertaining because of the way humans were forced to make decisions, not exactly the thing to me make me shit myself.
