A good chum of mine is currenty working on a flash short and is using handdrawn images colored in photoshop for each background. He imported them as rather quite large .jpgs and placed them in their appropriate frame, but beefed up the filesize in the process. I promptly suggested he change them to .pngs about the size of the movie's actual frame in order to decrease the filesize, but in doing so each time a new background would appear a few frames would lag upon appearance. When I was able to take a look at the .fla file myself, I adjusted the .jpg quality down several notches as a test to see if it would resolve the issue, but no luck. Any suggestions?

you could try the "trace bitmap" option, which will create vectors from the image and so should, if not reduce the file size, reduce at least the lag. I think that's right.

resize it in photoshop to 550x400 or whatever the flash's size is, then save and import.

what psi said. if you're importing stuff and finding yourself resizing them way below their original size and your final output is going to be swf, you're going to want to shrink them and then re-import them. jpg's are also better to use because they are smaller. but you can change them to export as jpg's from the library anyway, and flash does a good job of shrinking their size.
