If you watch TMST's other entries, he's been showing off how he can pull off  different styles.

First entry (open round) was a combintation of 1930s-1960s visual styles.
Second entry (round 1) was very experimental
Third entry (round 2) could've been something you saw on cartoon network or nickelodeon

I've been giving this guy high marks because I believe that this is the quality of stuff that you'd see in the real world. IT might help that he's a professional animator.

same annoyingly thick lines and shit

also he made music videos for lemon demon

The premise of the cartoon was to use a given song to create a mood. The given songs weren't of the highest quality, but he still managed to pull something off that looked good.

Yes, they're not the best quality, but that was also part of the challenge (to make it sound good).

The two that best pulled it off were TMST and Prof. Fate (prof. fate, actually had it remixed to sound really good, but he didn't finish his entry and was knocked out by someone else).
