well my first goal is to get into UCLA and to graduate with a bachelors degree in animation/media arts

then my goal is to get 2 years of industry experience through internships, commissions, etc.

After I get 2 years of industry experience I can start applying to studios.

then after i finally get a nice secure $25 an hour Studio Job I'll start saving and investing because you cant count on a studio keeping you hired forever they like to randomly fire people.

So after I save up enough money to invest in a studio I would open my own studio.

^- my grand scheme to making money off of stupid toons.

i dont really know what kind of career i could build for myself but...

i wanna majorly do 4 things:

1) do my "pretentious" experimental drawing thing to try to build an underground/mainstream reputation for myself
2) write books/novels
3) compose classical/jazz music
4) have some sort of career in the field of psychology

and teaching could be a possibility since i do get along with kids

Michelle

for some reason the idea of ant doing a novel appeals to me

Lmao if I ever became an artist I guess as far as I'm concerned it will just be my hobby. I already have another career path planned.

im in 11th and I live in San Diego. I'll be graduated by april or may of next year and then I'll take the summer off I guess and start up at Community College sometime at the end of the summer.

Also I can get into UCLA just fine, there's a TAG program in CA (Transfered Admission Guaranteed or some shit), so all I have to do is get my 50 General Ed credits or whatever done at a Community College and it's guaranteed that every UC school has to accept me. California is snazzy ehh. But yeah any tips about anything you have are still welcome bro!!

well for one if you wanna get a bachelors degree in animation you have to apply to the ucla film school your sophomore year of college. there's as many as 3000 transfer students, and only 15 of them get accepted to the film school. in addition, there are usually about 100 applicants who apply from within UCLA, and only 15 of them get accepted as well.

since im already a UCLA undergraduate, my chances are better than a transfer's. i took two years of general education classes and basically hung around the animation lab long enough that i became friends with everyone there including the teachers. now im applying to the undergraduate film program, and if i get accepted, i will major in film with an emphasis on animation.

the head teacher and head manager of the animation school wrote me letters of recommendation after seeing that etch a sketch shit. despite the slim odds, im hoping ill get in based on that. i also know two people who got accepted as undergraduates last year too so i know its possible. but its extreeemely tough, as you can tell by the odds. for me this is the scary part: even if you're one of the thirty finalists, they will eliminate half of you after an interview. i may get nervous during the interview and fuck everything up because apparently they fuckin grill you :[

before you decide on going to a city college, i suggest applying to some UC schools next year just to see if you get in. that includes UCLA, but also san diego, santa barbara (my hometown) and santa cruz. those are the schools you'll probably have the most fun at

well then why dont I just kill myself if ill never get a degree in animation. But on a less pessimistic note, how can I go straight to UCLA since I'll never afford that? I don't want to be in debt till im dead and I won't have enough money to move to L.A. and get an apartment and shit when im fresh out of high school, thats why the whole "go to community college while you live with mom rent-free and save up money to move to L.A. in 2 years" sounded swell.

I was thinking CalARTS would be great as well but thats probably just as hard to get into as ucla. life is too hard and stressful for my tastes reading what you just wrote to me makes me want to cry.

I wanted to Major in Media Arts does that make any difference at all or anything? Or do I still have to try to get into Film School and get laughed at like "AHAHAHA FUCK YOU AND YOUR POOR FAMILY YOULL NEVER MAKE IT IN THE BIZ KID YOURE A FAILURE GET THE FUCK OUT" because really thats about all that would happen I guess.

don't really know though I hear from a lot of people that what you major in and shit isn't important or that you shouldnt worry too much about college or something but that doesnt seem to make sense to me if i want to be good at animation i should go to a good school so i can get a good jobb andnasfUFUCK the world:(

lmfao im sorry i didnt mean to discourage ya! you've got plenty of time to prepare for next year when you'll be applyin

my family is poor as shit though and i AM in debt for life. i just took out a 10000 dollar loan this year. thats pretty much true for everyone in a university so community college really isnt a bad idea. if you're lookin for a great city college, santa barbara city college is pretty damn great.

now here's another option that might be better for you. have you considered san francisco state? they have a nice film school similar to UCLA's with a good animation school. i got accepted there and got a full ride scholarship. i turned it down to go to UCLA. i may be kicking myself for that one in the future if i dont get accepted to the UCLA film school

ooh and as for media arts, you have to apply to that as an incoming freshman. so next year you would apply for the DESMA (design and media arts) major along with applying to the general university. the chances are still pretty slim there, but trust me theyre a lot better for freshmen then they are for anyone else. the number of spots open to non-freshman applying to DESMA each year is however many people drop out.

and YES what your friend said is absolutely right. college education does not matter in terms of getting an animation job. it is ALL about your portfolio. nothing else.

ive never considered any school aside from Art Institue of SD (decided against it), and CalARTS (decided against it), and then UCLA which I thought would be great because of that guaranteed admission thing. I thought that meant that all I had to do was work hard and in 4 years time I'd have a degree but im not even gonna bother if the odds are like 15 in 1000 or whatever you said.

Why did SFS offer you a full scholarship? Is it because you're jewish? Would I be eligible for a full ride scholarship? I would take that in a heartbeat. I didn't have my eyes set on UCLA because it was UCLA, I only had that in mind because of that guaranteed transfer thing which i guess isnt so guaranteed. I'm actually glad you bent my world over and fucked it viciously in the ass, it's better I learn that shit now and not halfway through a degree program.

But really I'm quite interested in this "Full-ride scholarship" that you turned down. SF is farther away but I could save up or something I guess not really. I could maybe talk my mom into letting me live with her an extra year before going to college or something if i got a full-ride fucking scholarship im sure shed agree. And even if i didnt get the scholarship i dont know. SFS sounds better already if it isnt a 15 in 1000 chance ill get my fucking degree at all.

Thats really scary to think you could have wasted all that money and time just to show up and not be able to get your degree.

Zekey just recommended a college in France but that would require a lot more moving-money and having to learn a new language so I don't know.

yeah transferring into the UCLA film school is not the way to do it. but you could use that free transfer thing to get into UCLA and minor in film or something. thats what i'll do if i get rejected.

SFSU gave me a full ride scholarship because i applied for it. only 25 people out of 300 applicants got the full ride. it was extremely hard to turn down, but i gave it up anyways. if i dont get into UCLA film school i guess im a fuckin idiot. SFSU would be a nice place to transfer even without a full ride because its cheaper than the UCs and the film school is easier to get into. some animators apparently even go straight from SFSU to pixar after graduating.

calarts is really expensive and selective i wouldnt go there. same with USC. UCSD has some interesting new media stuff that i looked into when touring the campus, you could definitely go there with the free transfer thing

im thinking about digipen since it covers most of the shit i want to end up doing

and look at rtil

sQueef

my mom works at UCSD but im not sure if i get any discounts from that cuz shes just the parking supervisor

you probably saw a bunch of signs she put up around the campus lmfao

I'll definitely look into SFSU though that sounds very cool, even without the full ride.

Thanks for helpin us noobys out with your wisdom and experience of teh art schools teh lawlerskates and shit piefFUC ((((:

I'm getting a Bachelor's of Art (Animation) from Sheridan College, but my acceptance is conditional that I complete a year of pre-animation art fundamentals with a certain grade first.

So I have 4 years of college ahead of me, and I'll graduate with a gay piece of paper that means nothing to show for it.

Luckily, I've been working and saving money since I was 10 years old and I have an academic scholarship, so I'll graduate debt free.

From there I'm going to DFUC{HSDVG
I was gone, FOR SO LONG
