I love to hear a good soundtrack In a videogame, but sometimes I manage to found OSTs that are just beautiful. one of them are Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil. a couple of particular songs come to my mind when I remember this game.

Do you have other pieces you want to share?

These probably won't sound as stunning cuz they were made in the psx era in 1999.
Saga 2 is probably one of the better soundtracks from that period
It's a combination of heavy piano and ambient techno beats (sorta).
It sounds like "typical rpg music" to most today, but back then no one had heard anything like it; most stuff before it were pseudo-orchestral crap. The soundtrack listing is in german on purpose; the composer was born in germany to japanese parents. People tend to overlook this one because while the story wasn't that bad, the gameplay and series progression staple-- wasn't very good (e.g. casting spell several times to learn a new one).

Some of Unlimited Saga's music was alright too, but the game was also arguably shit. Like if stronger numbers are the worst game mechanic, then a game without those numbers but with the same amount of hours needed is worse. idk

I'm sure your taste is broader than mine
I stopped playing video games in 1998.

1998 was the year videogames peaked both PC and Console. no other time can top It.

I was expecting more people to come, until I remember the current status with TBA and I choose a very specific topic lol.

As someone who listens to more soundtracks than probably any other genre, it has just become such a broad space in my mind I just don't like to even talk about it. But I think I just have a general issue with not liking to talk about things I care about.

anyways, respect the thread, just not adding anything of value heh

lot of nostalgia talking here but skies of arcadia. i was in to this game in a big way for a long time. it was the first RPG i ever beat. still one of only a handful i've bothered playing, and the only one i've played more than once - 3 times to be exact. and i still need to beat it a 4th time because i never played Legends - the Gamecube port with more content - despite having a copy.

i meant to post in this thread when it was made but forgot.

there's a huge amount that have always stuck with me so i probably can't post all of them but i may as well post a handful anyway.

so many songs from both maplestory and kh are really incredible and memorable.

i also think a lot of beyond good and evil music was really great for sure, especially home sweet home.

Good thing In adding Yamaoka's Silent Hill works. being primarily dark ambient can also pull some nice song from It.

yeah there's a ton of stuff esp from the first 3 games with his music that's really great

I liked the song in the 4th tenchu game
the original track is a bit long tho.

Another Ubisoft game, but this is another one. The Land of the Livid Dead has one of my favorite track specially the variation of one of the last parts of the level, the tracks: Out of the Fray and Calm of the Ocean.

This one got me for surprise, I wasn't expecting a comatose Sourcemod to have a god-tier soundtrack.

Neotokyo might be one of the coolest total conversion mods to ever exist, damn shame that the devs disbanded and went to other places. but at least Ed Harrison cares about it. you can get the soundtrack on his Bandcamp and It also got released on physical not too long ago!

Personal favorites: Tin Soldiers and Nimbus

a lot of the music in this game was repurposed but some were original compositions. still my favorite civ game. don't play them anymore, sucks up too much time.

More music coming from a mod. this time Its part of a Doom 2 megawad collab "Community Chest 2". a hit and miss collab, but It has one of the best maps ever made for Doom 2 B.P.R.D.s The Mucus Flow and the midi that came with It.

Don't let the meme status of Minecraft let you to underestimate the work of C418 in this game. you will find very good and memorable pieces of ambient and electronic.

I didn't wanted to post this one here but "Minecraft" Is the most representative song of the OST

I remember Chris Christodoulou (Risk of Rain 1 and 2 and a few other things) doing a podcast with the sound designer for RoR2, where they mentioned another guy at Skewsound (the sound designer's company) called Steve Pardo had done a soundtrack for a game called Signs of the Sojourner, which I felt compelled to check out and have ended up listening to a lot:

Also big on this song from the FF8 soundtrack:

For being a small DSi Ware puzzle games they really have a great soundtrack.

Mighty Milky Way despite being obscure by its platform and the following game on this series, Mighty Switch Force, has some great tunes.

The title theme is a highlight specially the ending and vocals.

You're gonna be surprised by this addition. The track of a 2010's mobile game.

I have fond memories of The Sandbox Evolution, and one of those was the soundtrack, specially, the main theme and one of the tracks of the normal sandbox mode.

I like the second one, the calm it produce that piano and chorus, kind of reminds me of one of the creative mode tracks of Minecraft belonging to C418 second album, only without the "mood versatility" of that OST.

The main menu theme is perfect, another comparation with Minecraft's OST is the presence of the handpad which to everyone who played that game will remember the track "Aria Math"

The Sandbox Evolution was a fun little game to spent the time. Too bad that the developers abandoned, and deleted the game from app stores and use the name "The Sandbox" for a cryptoscam game. I should have suspected when remembering the shit ton of collaborations with brands and movie promotions, but actually, it was because the dev, Pixowl, was bought by another company around 2020. A fate worst than death.
