Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin are dead, and the layoffs and studio killing Is only getting worst. what a time to be alive.

Moral of the story: Never, NEVER, celebrate corporate fusions and acquisitions, ever.

Little Illustration made by myself based In the closure of Arkane Austin and the fate of the Prey IP

more specifically, never celebrate corporate acquisitions to publicly traded companies - when it comes time to squeeze more value out of the company to please shareholders, these smaller studios are always the first to get axed to temporarily increase margins.

i will always mention this video whenever prey gets mentioned lol.

the ip was dead as soon as bethesda bought them out. prey 2017 wasn't even supposed to be the name of the game, bethesda forced their hand to call it that. the director said himself he felt awful and wished he could apologize to the other team.

both really cool games. rip.

I know the story. Bethesda always manage to screw things over when they manage to get at least one success on their hands. Arkane deserved better, so Humanhead too.

QuoteI know the story
I don't.

They already provided the video of Matt McMuscles, but anyways.

Long story short: 3D Realms In the mid-90s announced a new FPS with their new technology of Non-Euclidean geometry that allows to make Impossible geometry and portals (Portal before Portal), went thru development hell and finally release by 2K and Humanhead studios cuz 3D Realms was working on DNF at the time. It was a success, granted the possiblity of a sequel, Bethesda bought Humanhead and the Prey IP. Prey 2 was announced but In 2014 was cancelled and years later they announced Prey by Arkane Studios, a totally different game with just the name on It, Bethesda delisted the original Prey to not confuse people, but this only caused outrage and criticized both Arkane and Bethesda for that, despite It wasn't Arkane's fault, it was Bethesda who screw everything up and made this mess with this IP.

The Independent sector Is where the future lies In.

i think it really just depends on what kind of games you like to play. i don't think mainline sports games and franchises like call of duty will ever escape the live service model - too many people who play them only play those games and don't know any better or really care enough to change their habits as consumers. on the other side of the spectrum you have completely independent developers who may not even have a publisher and put games out there that you can download and play freely wherever or whenever, and then everything else inbetween.

Dr. DiegO

Another thing that worries me about the rise of the Live-Service Model Is preservation. playing and keeping games will get very difficult In the future and not all of them will get the luck of having a workaround. just take a look of Overwatch, Game Of The Year 2016 that somehow manage to won over Doom Is now Impossible to play now.

at least with ow2 your purchases carried over to the newer/shittier game. those gacha games that people spend thousands of dollars on are just gone forever when they decide to shut it down. can't imagine the outcry when the big ones like fate/go die, not like that is happening anytime soon though but it can't last forever
