i don't think i could be assed to watch 5cm again, but i remember what bothered me the most about it was the way it was split in to 3 parts. was it even meant to be viewed as a film? it didn't feel like it. the 3rd act was my least favorite part.

Yeah, that's why I'd argue it's more like a poem. The third act is enjoyable if you buy into it being sardonic I think, but that's a difficult sell.

tbh i have not seen his other movies besides garden of words, which is also stunted in its own way, but it's better than 5cm. i don't think his earlier entries are worth seeing if they're even more amateur than 5cm. he probably should have made shorter format stuff cuz he wasn't very good at telling movie-length stories if 5cm is anything to go by.

Garden of Words is definitely his best aside from Keit愛. It is stunted but I think it hints at just enough lurking below the surface to be a remarkable. I would definitely recommend Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo if you're ever up for a re-imagining of Laputa, though it might offend you on those same grounds.

yeah because people fall for it and then the label sticks. honestly i think they have almost nothing in common when it comes to directing, so maybe people will see through it. i wonder if japanese audiences have ever had the thought come across their minds. somehow i doubt it.

Yeah Miyazaki is almost paternalistic in his storytelling, which pretty much always works in his favor as a parabalist. I think the comparison mostly comes from this being a culture which also called Tezuka and Miyazaki "the Japanese Walt Disney" respectively and is always looking for "the Citizen Kane of videogames."

Sardonic maybe isn't the right word. I think it's pretty clear both couples aren't actually in love though, or else they wouldn't have had such lame romantic misfires.

The first two kids realize they're not really all about each other after kissing but the dude goes on living in a fantasy. The second girl had romantic attachment to a guy she hardly knew. It's an ode to puppy love and people who struggle with growing up more than it is a love story.

Whether Shinkai intended that or not it's what he communicated to me.

Seeing Keit愛 a second time knowing how it's structured completely disarmed me. There isn't a single wasted line in the script.

9/10 for me.

i think your name could be a better movie in a few ways, but i think that can be achieved on the cutting room floor.. not with a remake. no matter what they do it won't be able to compare to the original.
