Did anyone else see Anno's latest masterpiece? Today was it's last showing in the U.S. under limited distribution by FuniFilms, which I was lucky enough to partake.

If you missed it on the big screen I highly suggest catching the DVD rebound. By far the best live-action movie I've seen this year (not that it had much to compete with), the best Godzilla movie since the original (making Gareth Edwards' 2014 attempt look like child's play), and nearly ranks alongside The Host as far as 21st century tokusatsu/kaiju movies go.

Saw it!!

It was a lot of fun, definitely felt more like the original films with the ensemble casting pacing of Godzilla and human oriented footage. Definitely the weirdest interpretation of Godzilla himself though, especially the first sequence. CGI could have been better there, but that was the only instance that kind of threw me off. Anyways, Anno's stylistic choices definitely show, especially being familiar with his other work. Camera angles, stuff like that.

And the music! It was so cool to hear some of the classic Godzilla scores appear on the big screen. Also it's pretty great that Anno literally reused that one track from Evangelion.

Oh, and while I was watching it, I found Godzilla's googly eyes to be sort of silly, but now that I think back to it, it sort of served as a constant reminder that while sure the whole concept is conceptually grim, it's a film that is meant to be enjoyed and not taken too seriously.
