I started a thread on this game like two years ago but I think I can do a much better job selling it now that it's releasing on Schteam later today.

Danganronpa is a friendly graphical adventure game where nobody has to die.

Reasons you should play this game if you haven't already:

  • Fantastic mechanics based on the point and click formula with action, shooter, puzzle and rhythm elements.
  • Lots of well translated text to scroll through that engrosses you in one of the genre's most unforgettable narratives.
  • The story being a pastiche of all your favorite genres and works from those genres in every medium, from tableau vivant to sprite films.
  • A fairly well acted English voice track starring Brian Beacock that I strongly encourage you to ignore and play with the Japanese track instead.
  • Over a dozen lovely character designs and colored dialogue windows, some of which you will get very attached to throughout your play (think Undertale).
  • A stylish visual aesthetic and impeccable atmosphere with music by one of the best working composers (killer7, God Hand, No More Heroes).
  • Seriously, look at how cute and likeable all these guys look. Oh yeah, I wanna play that game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V61l6A3_6uA
  • Partake in shitposting in one of the most vibrantly cancerous fanatic domains this side of Homestuck.
  • A sequel that for the most part lives up to the promises of the original.
  • Presented completely uncensored which is becoming a rarity.
This may not seem like a game all of you would like, based on genre, taste, class, it's being "anime" or whatever, but I strongly encourage you to at least try the demo. I believe the best storytelling transcends petty divisions along lines such as those, and Danganronpa falls into that category. Maybe some of you felt the same way about VNs before Katawa Shoujo, anime before Samurai Champloo, painting before Bouguereau and Cabanel, or books before Moby Dick. Yeah, it's like that.

I realize $24 launch price is steep for a game that's been out in Japan for six goddamn years, so I will be providing torrents as I come across them.

Ways to avoid spoilers:

  • Don't read your Google autocomplete menu.
  • Don't look at your Youtube suggested video thumbnails.
  • Don't look at this thread.
  • Don't look out your window.
  • Don't open your eyes (playing it blind is the only way).
  • Don't spoil the game for anyone or I will haunt you.
  • Don't speak to your friends who've finished it (ever again if necessary).

everyone i've talked to who likes danganronpa really wanted me to play it. one of my friends even gave me a rom and emulator i haven't touched once. i have no idea what incarnation of danganronpa it is. probably the first one i guess

i hate to admit it but it being on steam would make me more inclined to purchase it and possibly even play it (buying a game on steam is a lot easier than playing it and i don't even have a very large steam library)

the art style does not really interest me but the art isn't bad, either. just not my style. that wouldn't stop me from trying it, though.

how long does it take to beat the game? just ballpark estimates here

Bamyasi

About 24 hours. It will fly by like nothing though once you're hooked.

Do it for her.

Bamyasi

Yeah it's a schweet deal.

Especially once you realize how much some of those hours are actually worth.

crackers

I have watched the anime: Is there any reason I should play this game, now I know the story?

Bamyasi

Honestly I'm not sure. Did you see all the episodes? I played the game before watching the show and couldn't really enjoy the latter for that reason. It didn't really replicate the feeling or pacing of the game and imo is a poor substitute.

The best reason I could give would be that it might help you understand more of the references in the sequel but I dunno how much that's worth honestly.

You might just want to torrent it.

Also the game is out as of 10 minutes ago and is on sale for 20% off get it while it's hot also don't watch the anime.

Dust

I love it when games stop being mainly exclusive to systems I don't have.

in any case, danganronpa's piqued my curiosity for some time and i'm definitely gonna check it out now that it's on steam

I feel sorry for the sucker who thought watching the P4 anime first was a good idea.

Also looking forward to your thoughts. You won't regret your purchase I guarantee.

Just don't read anything about it seriously.

crackers

ive only seen the persona 4 animation. never played it.

MealGin

Not the main game, but I just started playing "Another Episode".

It's a pretty clear Resident Evil clone, but from what I've played so far, I quite enjoy. The anime cutscenes are kinda neat (but the actual CG ones do leave a lot to be desired).

Bamyasi

I'm still on the fence about AE. I haven't played much of it but it just seems like it was made exclusively for franchise milking. Then again I could say the same thing about certain aspects of SDR2 I thought were hackneyed. I really hope they don't fuck up the anime this time.

P4 is a game I would say is probably still worth playing even if you know the story.

crackers
