"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

"...it stimulates the part of the brain called "shatners-bassoon", and that's the bit of the brain that deals with...time perception..."

I liked it but I was surprised how meme it was after looking back at it.

So are people hating this game on principle yet?

half of 4chan because of the fanbase

but that goes without saying for any popular game

I'd give it a chance. It may actually be good, but I probably won't think it's the single greatest game experience of my life. I've already played one game I believe to be the best in terms of story/gameplay and that's Chrono Cross with Chrono Trigger being my personal second.

I guess the music pretty good too.

Bamyasi

Can you motherfuckers please stop talking about Undertale until I finish it. Jesus.

Also boy howdy do I have a lot to say about this game.

And yes Chrono Cross is fucking fantastic.

the music is the best part imo

clearly the majority of people who play undertale love it, but i can only describe my experience with it as lukewarm. i think generally the fans give it too much credit for being innovative when it heavily borrows mechanics and ideas from other games. not that there's anything wrong with that, but it gets overhyped because most people who play it aren't familiar with that fact since they don't seem to play japanese games (of which undertale takes a lot of its cues from)

BluPhoenix

i dont really think undertale is innovative by any means but i thoroughly enjoyed it

Interestingly enough, that how you introduce niche titles to the general public. I mean, I've never seen so many English VNs until the popularity of Katawa Shoujo took the Internet by storm (that's a bit of an exaggeration but you know what I mean). It really does open up the market. But this is borrowing from other games, although what titles -shrug-

ks was a little different because it brought a resurgence of an entire genre. undertale is just an rpg. it's more the "meta" stuff that undertale toys with that i'm talking about. the only games that it has very obvious ties to are earthbound and cave story - even the name is an homage to it.

I thought the title had something to do with furries, heh. But then again... Pixel likes kemono stuff so...

But yeah, I see what you mean, good point.

people keep talking about how undertale hentai keeps popping up on their dash but ive never seen anything

hopefully it stays that way

Good! I hope it doesn't show up on yours ever.

I just don't like how the protagonist is a sickly yellow color. Have you ever run into a person who is that yellow? No, you haven't because they have that yellowness take care of at the hospital in which they were born. Unless you're some nature-loving, tree-hugging, aroma-scented ass candles hippie, you gave birth to your child in some forbidden neck of the woods with a few bears as the midwifes.

Other than that, I want to play as some cute monster and devour human faces. Is that so much to ask for?

Bamyasi

After finishing the pacifist route and getting the "True End," I'm left with three major questions:
• How much more content is there in the genocide route?
 • What was so bad about the underworld that made the monsters want to leave?
 • Did my pacifistic, manner-instilling baphomet mom really just advocate Asgore's going to the surface and killing people?
With these answered I can finally write my big stupid textwall for closure and possibly move on with my life.

I'm open to playing the game again though depending on the answer to 1.

1. the geno run not only changes the ending to the game, but replaces the storyline of happy go lucky themes and memes entirely with nihilistic horror, and you are the ax murderer.

2. da humans banished da monsters underground cuz humans are assholes or something and now monsters all wanna get back out cuz da humans have it better than da monsters :o .... oh and its 'crowded' underground

3. i think she was just telling him how to actually cross the border while his method was just stalling for time, supporting her argument of asgore being a wimpy bitch.
1. it's just monotonous killing until encounters stop (you'll know when they're all gone), up until you reach "new home" (place before you normally fight asgore) THEN you finally get some bits of lore you wouldn't really get in the other routes.  (actual spoiler)
it's just Flowey explaining what it was like for him first becoming a flower.
There's also very few real bosses, most of them turn into jokes on the genocide route, with the final boss being ridiculously hard, you probably won't even pass it honestly. You don't miss too much after this though, just a simple ending.

While writing this Stu explained 2 and 3 more simply then I could.
Bamyasi

Thanks, you two.

 • Well I'm definitely playing it again, then.
 • Seems undercooked, if you ask me. Someone should've bothered telling them the overworld is just as terrible and overcrowded.
 • A touch out of character, but I'll buy it. Ironic she would berate someone for being that way to humans while encouraging the PC to behave passively toward monsters. I guess that shows where her loyalty actually lies, though. Then again the line was probably just Fox compensating for a minor plot hole.
Eh, I'll still play it. I consider it a challenge. One of my biggest complaints about Undertale's endgame was that it only presented the pretense of difficulty, without actually being difficult, which set it apart from say, traversing Hell in Cave Story. I guess Fox wanted everyone to be able to see the ending without looking up a dumb let's play, though.
If either of you have criticisms you'd like to share, I'd appreciate hearing them, because I suspect we might have some of the same gripes.
I guess one gripe I had was playing this game made me realize I wanted a more "mature" version of this, and by that I guess I mean one with a lot more evil characters and such. the only thing that really makes any character evil (besides flowey) is the fact they fight you to the death at all. Even Asriel if you caught him in the games epilogue state(he's allll the way at the start, I don't blame you if you missed him) after passive run says the surface is a lot more of a meaner place then the underground. "There's a lot of "Floweys" out there".

Everything down here is SO NICE, it's sick.

also for genocide, try not killing any "main boss" before clearing the areas.
