(Thank-you soap!)

And some stuff I have that isn't in the DJT:
Mega Learning Pack, 37 kami-sama-damning gigs.
some Graded Readers
Listen to Japanese people talk, and then some music. There's some nice apps (at least on Android) of nothing but Japanese talk shows, radio plays, whatever. No music, just talking!
Lots of downloady music here and here, if you can't torrent it or something.
You can usually here a word pronounced here.
And cause why not, Japanese fonts; cute, spooky, whatever. Make your next shitty meme macro in JP.

Bamyasi

First link is broken but it's probably in one of these OPs.

I've considered trying to learn Japanese just so I can read the country's Symbolist poetry because embarrassingly little of it has been translated, let alone very well well (aside from Tomino's Hell, which had an urban legend as impetus).

Plus my neighbors are Japanese so we could, like, converse about the weather but, like, in Japanese.

haha ialready have some japanese fonts because i throw it in my paintings sometimes

so you are self taught then? i am skeptical of learning another language on my own/online. how far does simply listening go? i feel like if i don't have someone to practice it with i am going to very quickly forget what i learned. this happened to me after taking 4 years of spanish. i was actually quite good at speaking by the end of my studies and visting spain. but after i stopped, i had no one to speak spanish with and now i barely remember any of it.

i have some japanese friends on skype i could practice typing with fwiw

i have seen these threads before but never opened. i'll check out their pastes but i wonder how useful talking in the threads really is considering that it'st 4chan.

my neighbors are japanese as well but i have never formally met them, living in an apartment building people come and go a lot. all i know is there's a husband and wife and 3 loud children.

"If you don't do anything, then you start losing stuff." is the same for learning alone as it is with learning with a teacher. So long as you're doing even one thing every day, even if it's just listening closely to a comedy podcast, you'll keep the ball rolling. It's probably helpful to begin by finding one thing you love that takes as little effort to do/access as possible, in Japanese (/ your target language), and try to watch / read / listen / play that when you really don't want to do anything Japanesey that day. Although, yeah, having that one thing be talking to an actual native speaker for even two minutes would be the besttttt.

I don't think learning alone is any slower; I feel like I've picked up more Japanese pissing around for two years than I have French from four years of high school. while there's some things you miss out on, and motivation can slip hard, you can basically study any damn way you want (everything is valid, so long as it's in JP) and tailor everything to yourself.
I do think that if one studies alone, then they need to really focus on imitating input, do lots of listening, etc. to make up for the lack of a person / immediate correction. You should definitely capitalize on your sweet nihongo-natives connections if you can lol.

There are some sites where natives will correct learner's writing and speaking... let me see... http://lang-8.com/ , although I could've sworn I had another site bookmarked.

But it's basically down to levels of input and output. Do more in JP, learn more JP and faster. Do less, learn less and slower. The best and worst thing about learning alone is that that is up to you.

Vaguely related mini-lesson:
Apparently  「死ね!」 (shine) "Die!"  is the Japanese equivalent of "Fuck you!", meaning: this word actually hurts in Japan. Right in the feels.

Which puts the full-page manga panels I saw the other day of a girl standing in a room covered with scrawlings of "SHINE SHINE SHINE SHINE!" in a new light.

Also lol @ Puritan Americanisms, having sex is literally the easiest worst thing you can wish on someone.
