Two words: Fucking see it.

Honestly I can't remember the last time I saw a blockbuster, or movie in general for that matter, achieve everything it was trying to achieve and do it so spectacularly.

SrsSam77

Yes
the shit was fucking amazing
It also turns out the director said the movie was a feminist movie to shield himself from criticism from all the women getting rekt, so there's that.

Bamyasi

Honestly the movie didn't strike me as feminist (it was still called "Mad Max" after all). It just wasn't as sexist as most movies of it's ilk.

I think ideology is clouding your vision, Sam.

what makes this action blockbuster stand out is that you can see how much blood, sweat and tears went in to actually making it. it's not enough any more that the creators of a film are fans of what they're making, because over-reliance on cgi has become very tiresome and boring to look at. at least for me, anyway - special effects no longer wow me very often anymore, unless they are used in necessity it comes off as cheap. of course, george miller was the perfect person to pick to direct this film, and he loves to take things over the top. i think the best example is this article talking about the creation of Doof, his working flamethrower guitar and rig complete with an operational speaker system - just one of the amazing functional works of art used in this film. works of art that they can even take on convoys after the fact.

unfortunately the supermodel actresses playing the slaves gave pretty unconvincing performances, but that's my only nitpick about the movie. the plot was thin, but spirited enough without trying to take itself too seriously that it didn't matter. i liked it so much i want to see it in theaters again to take it all in. and i rarely feel that way about a movie. overall i'd give it an 8/10 .. maybe a 9 but i need to wait and see how i feel about it after a second viewing.

Honestly I don't think anyone else but George Miller could have pulled it off. The first two movies of the franchise are some of my favorites of their genre, and I like how they've gotten progressively weirder (or at least more flamboyantly so) with every installment.

The supermodels' performances didn't really bother me because they were more just there for set dressing/symbolism, but other people I saw it with voiced that same complaint.

A lot of the things I loved about this movie I also loved about 2013's Snowpiercer. Definitely check that one out if any of you haven't.

Edit: Wow three posts beginning with the word "honestly" in a row. This movie is so good it made me illiterate.

rtil

snowpiercer has been in my queue for a while. it was on my radar ever since i found out who directed it.

i guess the supermodel slave girls bothered me because every line they delivered was super flat and they stood out because of who they were. but they could have been a lot worse , fortunately they mostly stayed out of the way during the high-octane stuff.

i'd love to see a sequel diving more into the other warring factions that we got a glimpse of. i know they have rich backstories that miller was only able to touch on outside of the film's story. but the film doesn't have the mass appeal to cover the budget, unfortunately. looks like it's going to gross ~$40M this weekend when they spent $150M-$200M on it. i'm not sure how it will do overseas. hopefully it at least breaks even.

I didn't say it was a feminist movie, I just said what I learned from looking around at other's opinions about it, I also said it cuz it was relevant because of the recent buzz about people boycotting it because it was feminist propoganda

The only thing I got out of the movie was testosterone

and a boner, a man-boner

rtil

it's a shame that anyone is boycotting the film because it needs all the BO love it can get if we want to see more works of art like this. it's going to be eclipsed by Pitch Perfect 2. i guess that's what MRA's want

Fucking Avengers, man.

It also kills me that so many critics are calling this a "B-movie." There's nothing "B" about it. It's a better production than anything nominated for an Oscar last year.

Also the sound design holy fuck.

i think it's an insult to call this film a b-movie. b-movies wish they were this movie. but i fully expect it to get robbed at the oscars anyway. not that i care anymore, cuz if i did it will just upset me like it does every year.

i still haven't seen the new avengers film and i probably won't until it winds up on streams. i've been burnt out on cape movies since "man of steel" and it hasn't gotten any better. it probably doesn't help that i have almost zero interest in the marvel and dc comic book universes.

Gerkinman

Everyone knows that any movie that isn't directed by a Hollywood director is a B movie! Us dirty Australians could never accomplish anything more than that. </3

I am looking forward to seeing it on Tuesday and I really hope it does well, not just because nothing successful comes out of Australia anymore, but because I want to see more practical effects in movies. I haven't seen anything since Godzilla last year because everything looks so fucking fake now that I struggle to get invested in anything I watch. I know that Mad Max made more money in Australia than Star Wars did the year it came out, I hope it happens again.

i hope so, too. the film needs all the love it can get

Bamyasi

3D or not 3D, that is the question.

rtil

i saw it in 3d for fun. i don't regret it but i don't think i would have missed it, either. honestly i never really paid attention to it nor did it distract me at any point. except maybe when the steering wheel goes flying into the screen

SrsSam77

IMO the 3d was great and really added quite a bit to most of the scenes, makes you feel like there's sand and engine oil flying in your face; although It did mess with my eyes/focus on the screen at some points, then again, my eyes aren't in the best shape.

Bamyasi

Yeah I saw it in 2D tonight and really missed the extra dimension. Really helps you know where you and the camera are in space during the more kinetic scenes.

Aside from that it was just as good. Only movie I've seen where the 3D actually added something instead of being a gimmick (that goes for you too, James Cameron).

rtil

i think james cameron deliberately treats 3d as a gimmick cuz he thinks that's how it's meant to be used

just another way he excels at insulting his audience
