my friend who watched the old OVA said that it's related, but the old one was a confusing clusterfuck and this one is actually interesting and has a great storyline.

Good thead; I remember watching the OVA and just going "what????" and i'm glad the anime was started. Just with the first four episodes I already understand what happened in the OVA.

in the end i gave this the same score as uchouten kazoku (7/10). probably could have used a few more episodes imo, as the final arc was pretty short and underwhelming. it was a lot of fun to watch and it sure as hell made a lot more sense than the old OVA. i'm not really sure why they felt the need to re-animate the scene where [spoiler]Koto and her mom meet for the first time when she breaks the barrier and they kiss - they changed it so they only hug now, i didn't really see the point to changing that, it was cute and had more impact.[/spoiler]

the universe has a lot of potential, but in most cases it only scratched the surface. would be nice to see another ova or something in the future, since the story of this season is pretty much wrapped up.
