That website has been on a steady decline since like 2009.

I'm kind of happy about this. Let's Plays and the post-2007 online videogame community have ruined the medium for me in a lot of ways. There's no mystery to finishing an interactive narrative if you can just search "Ni no Kuni ending cinematic" on Youtube and have the whole thing spoiled (though the internet writ large has had this effect on consumer media in general). That said, I'm not really involved in the multiplayer scene so I can understand how this might be a major bummer.

tl;dr: Google sucks but at least it's safe to play games again.

I know some of the big gaming distributors (Microsoft, Sony) are defending gaming channels that use their content. I also know that Nintendo is not.

Personally I don't really care too much about lets plays and whatnot, but there's tons of other great content made from games out there (machinima, guides, anything roosterteeth is putting out, casted SC2, LoL, etc).

The sad thing is that youtube can pretty much do anything they want, since all its competitors are so far behind.

don't be happy about this man, you gave a pretty weak reason to hate let's plays and be totally cool with censoring thousands of hours of what could be, for all we know, diverse, free-thinking, independent content (lest us forget youtube is still pretty revolutionary in the grand scheme of things)
just because you were thinking of pewdiepie and annoying ni no kuni spoilers doesn't mean I'm not having a good time with dark souls videos, good let's plays, or whatever

i tend to avoid spoilers myself, but the thing i look up before buying ANY GAME is general gameplay from the consumer and NOT from the official site that promotes it because all you're going to get is sappy pros with no cons plus ridiculously rendered cut scenes and footage from the actual game for like... 30 seconds when the game itself lasts several hours. i don't want to watch entire letsplays, but i do want to see about 20-30 minutes of regular gameplay before making my decision of buying whatever i'm looking for.

idgaf about lets players' or their measly youtube paychecks - they don't pay out as much as some would lead you to believe, networks might, but the amount of monetizeable views you need just to make a dollar is insane, and adsense only writes you a check every $100 minimum. then there's the entitled whining over not making a living from posting videos of yourself playing video games while making stupid jokes on a webcam, sorry but the market is oversaturated and it's a pipe dream with an unstable income model. this content ID thing is just the tip of the iceberg - these people should know that at any time youtube can yank away their revenue stream whenever they want. youtube is not obligated to pay out adsense money to anyone, and if they felt like it they could take it away. making money off youtube is not a job, it is a privilege.

the only reason youtube will never do that is because gaming content is a considerable chunk of their content. but it's barely enough to hedge your bets on. someday youtube will fall to the wayside, and the people that relied on adsense paychecks will be out of a "job".

as far as the content ID thing goes, it's barely any different from the current copyright complaint filing system they've had for years. if you DMCA'd something, it would be flagged down almost immediately - same with the auto-detecting software. then you had to file a counter-claim to try and bring the video back up, and that takes longer. why? because youtube doesn't want to be liable in the case that a video really is stolen (and people do steal and re-upload shit to youtube all the time, sometimes even trying to make money off their stolen videos), and every second it's up it does damage to the holder. there are also consequences for filing false DMCA's.

the algorithm side of it is definitely annoying, and often times the claims are wrong. it has happened to me before, and i had to file a counter-claim and i actually won my case. you just have to argue fair use. as far as footage of people playing video games being grounds for monetizeable content.. i think these gaming channels should consider themselves lucky that they get to make any money off of it. i'm sure they worked very hard whoring themselves out and spouting memes for years to get where they are today, but let's be honest, being a youtube content creator is not a job. you are at the mercy of google's youtube terms and conditions, and that includes adsense and all their related products. you have no rights, and you are bound by their rules which are subject to change at any time. google has made it very apparent that they do not really care how negatively people react to change - it's their way or the highway.

if google didn't care about nearly all of youtube screaming over the google+ integration, they're certainly not going to care about a handful of gamer channels whining about losing their adsense money.

youtube has been wanting to do this for years, they just finally grew the balls to go through with it

it isn't going to matter to them because most of their success comes from shitty viral videos which faggots share on facebook, not video game content

frankly most of the 'people' who do these videos are kind of fucking shit to begin with, their videos are bad and seeing them removed might be a loss for LIBERTY and THE FREE PRESS or whatever but i'm so fed up with how shitty these people are i just can't bring myself to care about them

'gaming' is an unhealthy hobby *snorts neodymium magnets* what's that i can't hear you over the sound of my tabletop miniatures fistfucking your shitty video games

Bamyasi

Well apparently cutscenes aren't even subject to copyright acquisition (sigh). Maybe I should have actually watched the videos instead of coming straight out with a reactionary, ill informed opinion.

I guess that's a good way to avoid buyer's remorse or whatever. I prefer to just buy games blind, or after watching one or two short PV's. Sure a lot of them end up being shoddy, but some of the most fun I've had this year has been with characteristically "bad" games (Toki Towa, Killer is Dead), and a lot of my favorite games ever were received poorly upon release. So I guess in that respect watching a Let's Play is better than listening to some prefabricated review from a paid "critic".

This is more a deciding factor for me than anything. I try not to pay more than a dollar per hour of gameplay. Games are too expensive not to provide at least that.
