if you need 10 diagrams a powerpoint and a small essay to describe the world youre creating i think something is wrong and youre probably a better writer than you are an illustrator.
I'm by no means a talented writer or familiar with Sysra but I can say pretty confidently this is false.

The best worlds are built around stories, not the other way around.

youve taken one section of the post i made out of context apparently ignoring whatever else i said before. i agree a good story makes a good world, however, i even stated beforehand;

it makes me think theyre stalling and completely alienates me when you have no fucking clue if theres a story or a point to any of it.

if there is a story in syrsas work i dont care because its lost among a mass of self indulgent hyper facts and fetish material. that is not a good way to convey a story of any kind. im talking from what is 3 years of experience watching fellow students fail to pitch ideas to professional animators and illustrators in the real world. nothing alienates a room full of people more than a textbook of facts and things no one other than the creator cares about.

this looks odd to me

because the clouds look as if they lay sprawled on the ground, virtually touching it

it looks like sea, ocean or somethen this way

That's sort of what I was aiming for. I was hoping to make clear how tall the spire is by showing how low the clouds are in comparison. Though I guess that didn't come across too well?

I'm thinking of redoing the image from a lower angle, like from a straight path through the surrounding forest, so you can see that path go on with no end in sight,and then behind it, behind the clouds, see the Academy.

i think the problem is that you need a clear vanishing point in the distance if you're going to have the camera high up like that. it's all about the angle and the composition. there are many ways to show how huge this building is, you can try thinking about what would best portray that from different scenarios. for example, what if you were standing very close to it, looking up to the top? stuff like that. this is what thumbnails are good for.

Oh whoops I was totally unclear.

I was trying to reinforce what you're saying, except I don't think he's a better writer than illustrator, because I don't think he's a good writer at all.

And this is proof. They're not good writers because they aren't good storytellers. If they couldn't get you interested in the project with a pitch, it's because their project sucks. No amount of escapist masturbation-cum-fanfiction worldbuilding can change that, like rtil said.

Sorry! Still friends I hope.
