So my cousin who is studying in Japan right now just showed me this international invitation program for animation artists. I'm not sure if anyone here is eligible for this program besides Rtil, but y'all should check it out!

I summarized it below, but here's the link: http://japic.jp/eng/2013/05/information-for-prospective-applicants-4/#more-440

Basically the Japan Image Council has a program where they select 3 elite animation students from around the world to enroll in a FREE 70-day residence program in TOKYO!!
They cover your travel expenses, living allowance, travel insurance, and rental accommodation (including workspace) and you get to live in Tokyo, work on projects, and meet Japanese creators!!

In order to be eligible you must:

- Reside outside of Japan and be a citizen of a country other than Japan.
- Have had one of their animated works screened at an international film festival, exhibition or similar event.
- Be between the ages of 20 and 35 on September 9th 2013.
- Be able to speak either English or Japanese at least well enough to communicate in everyday situations.
- Be in good health.
- Have access to the equipment necessary to participate in a remote interview (i.e. a computer capable of connecting to the internet and using Skype).

Aims of the project:
This project, organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunka-cho / Government of Japan), is an artist in residence program which aims to provide three outstanding young animation artists from around the world with an opportunity to come to Tokyo and create new works while directly interacting with Japanese animation culture. In doing so, we aim to promote both the creation of excellent works of animation and a better understanding of Japanese culture.

Program summary
Education/training: participants will give reports on the progress of their work being created as part of the program and will receive guidance from accomplished Japanese animators/experts on a regular basis.
Visits/exchange events: participants will visit animation studios and participate in exchange events with artists and students enrolled in art programs at educational institutions.
Creation of a new work: participants will begin a new work while in Japan and present the finished work or one part of a work in progress at the end of their stay.

Applications will be accepted beginning July 1st 2013. Application forms and all required documents/materials must be received by this office by September 9th.

It seems like a really fantastic opportunity, I've never seen a program where you get to live and train in Japan and get such comprehensive financial coverage (Rtil you should do this!!)

is this or as in i can get by just from speaking english fluently? cuz i don't speak a lick of japanese.

shura

From my understanding if you can speak english, you're fine.

i think they're worried more for students from like russia or mexico or wherever who don't speak either

rtil

well i'll definitely be signing out for this, then. i dunno if i'm an " elite animation student" but it can't hurt to try

shura

what on earth did you have at a film festival

redmongoose

"Drink Your Milk" won first prize in the category of animation at the 2002 wku film festival when I was like a sophomore in high school, my tv productions professor entered it without telling me and then just dropped the plaque on my workbench one day without saying anything
