With the Skull Girls Steam Beta finally out, I thought I'd make a multiplayer thread specifically dedicated to learning and playing fighting games. Main post will have links to tutorials and videos for whatever fighting games TBA is interested in learning about, which right now seems to be mostly just Skullgirls and Smash Bros. Feel free to post gamertags and requests for what exactly you'd like to learn/what you're having trouble with, and I'll either find what you're looking for or play you myself and learn with you.

i'm sure i'll be needing this thread for skullgirls, i am shit at fighting games

i support this idea
button mashing will only get me so far

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

"...it stimulates the part of the brain called "shatners-bassoon", and that's the bit of the brain that deals with...time perception..."

ok, here's a question - how the fuck does this work?

my issue is that i cannot complete this combo when i get to Cugine Kick, because the attack doesn't register on Filia when she is down, so the combo is broken. If i wait for her to get up so I can hit her, the combo also fails.

this training part is supposed to teach you how to hit enemies when they're down - but Cugine Kick seems to be a mid-range attack  instead of one that aims down.

you gotta kick her when she's bounced off the ground.

Cugine Kick isn't the Off-The-Ground attack (henceforth known as OTG)

You should be hitting her with Diamond Scratch (c. LK) while she's bouncing, then chaining into Cugine Kick immediately. If you let her hit the ground again before Cugine Kick comes out, it won't connect, so be quick.

fml

well i did that crazy combo earlier even though it took me like 15 minutes, i can fuckin do this

rtil

alright i finished all the training. i'm glad i did, i learned a lot about fighting games. now is the hard part - applying it

Gilthwixt

Honestly there's so much that goes on in a real match that you won't be able to remember much less apply everything right away. Even if you can get a combo 9/10 times on a training dummy, under pressure and against a real opponent you might hit that combo 3/10 times or less, if you even get the chance. I'd say at most 15% of your skill comes from practicing combos in the lab and the rest is actually playing a human being. The only way to learn character matchups, how to react to mixups, how to zone and space yourself, and general strategy is to fight people. So just start fighting people online and don't get discourage if you don't get even 1 win in 50 matches. It's a steep learning curve.

What character(s) do you plan on learning?

Also I forgot they haven't released Lobby play yet so I actually have no way of playing you directly until they do =/

rtil

yeah i'm not expecting to be good or anything in fact i expect to get my ass kicked. but i'm not going to go straight in to matchmaking, i doubt i am going to learn anything by losing all the time. i'm going to try a story mode first. and i'd like to learn cerebella first, because she reminds me of my favorite character from tech romancer, bolon & pollin.

i found valentine and peacock complement each other pretty well, with Vial Hazard(sometimes Savage Bypass) and Screwball Cannonball as assists respectively. so until i find something better they're my dream team

almost managed arcade mode on ridiculous difficulty with them. the ai are no problem it's just marie. her 3rd form always ends in rage-induced mashing and lots of tears. im playing it on the 360 tho no idea what it's like on the pc
