i think regenerating health was first introduced so that game designers wouldn't have to spend extra time deciding where to place health packs and thus finish the game faster

and also because it's fucking easy. why have health packs (making you want to avoid taking damage) or include a medic class/tools (encouraging teamwork) when you can just suck your thumb behind a tree and regenerate that frying pan sized wound you just got?

that being said, e3 was pretty lackluster, same as last year. more kinect shit from m$, more wiiU shit from ninny, sony was just flatout meh except fro watch_dogs, and i can't be assed to care bout anyone else
<+fawx> im trying to animate a dick coming out of a toaster how do i go on about doing this
<~rtil> well fawx what you would do is delete the fla and do something productive instead

<+ansel> i lure children into my van with candy and then i read them passages from 'the origin of species'
<%ropesnake> billy con ends with billy raping his cat
<+billymonks> FUCK YOU BUG

<~rtil> ya one time i gave this hobo some cat food and he ate it like the animal he is it pleased me

I guess I only play games where regenerating HP would be a negative then.

Yeah to be honest, generally speaking regenerating HP is what people want in most cases. I mean of course it really varies on the kind of game, but the common trend (for both the good and the bad, the AAA and the... not so AAA) of non stop action is what seems popular right now. If you want to throw in the non-regenerating health, you can certainly make it work, but the games pacing needs to be heavily altered (think half-life 2, and how action varies so much).

Some games do do a type of hybrid though, such as some of the newer Halo titles (you can regen some health, but have a second health bar that does not regen and depletes when your regenerating shields are down)

South Park: The Stick of Truth - Trey Parker and Matt Stone - Microsoft E3 2012 Press Conference

and

E3 2012: South Park Interview with Trey Parker and Matt Stone

just found those two (they start similar, but the second one includes some interviews).

Pretty interesting once again, it's also cool to see them do stuff in 2012 cause you barely ever seem them on television.
