Remember, this is Disney we are talking about here. Of course, they don't want the viewers to think that the Shawn had died (by the way, Shawn? Really? A japanese kid named Shawn?).  This is why I liked the stories in Don Bluth's films better, they were more realistic and not all roses and fluffy shit like Disney always are. Also, was the novel the movie based off of even in Japan? I don't think so. But that's a minor gripe, it was just odd to have the name Shawn in a Japanese setting.

On a separate note, the movie was good, probably not the best put out by Ghibli but certainly not the worst. Probably the best used of environment sounds and sfx in an animated film. The random parts were the vocalist started to sing threw me off as it overlapped with what some of the characters dialogue, not sure if that was the fault of the movie or the theater I was in. 

And why was that old woman so goddamn suspicious? I mean, damn, why. The kid has a bad heart and she's constantly looking at him like he's some kind of criminal or guilty until proven innocent. Shawn was a good character and I liked him, his growth as a person was evident as he became brave thanks to his friendship with Arrietty.

I find it kinda strange, however, considering they used the same voice actors... *researching* wait, no, they didn't use the same voice actors... that's weird... why did they create two different dubs for the same language?

Now some of your posts make a lot more sense, especially the ones referring to the boy being all creepy and mumbling psycho stuff, making me wonder what all of you were talking about...
Well, I can't really decide whether the version I've watched was better or not but the voice actors didn't make an awkward or weird impression at all so if you are not content with the Disney fabrication you might actually consider checking out the UK dub. It is quite British, however...

all of the aesthetics blew my mind, and as usual, nothing is quite like seeing a ghibli film in an actual theater. everything was obviously visually beautiful and the ballin sound really made the experience like some of the other fellows here have said. but yeah, i agree. the characterization was lacking, it sort of felt like the actual interaction and development between the characters sort of took a back seat to the impressive immersion. it had the ghibli magic through aesthetics alone, but it didn't quite have the same unique brand of enchantment that seems to come whenever miyazaki himself directs a film, which i guess is understandable because he didn't direct Arrietty. this was yonebayashi's directorial debut. really inspiring, not my favorite ghibli film but still great
