I'm sorry (not sorry) but the last thing I posted is worse than everything else in this thread.

Sure bad art isn't fun to look at but it's never killed anybody.

There is actual blood on old media's hands.

Seriously the only rational explanation I can come up with for them broadcasting this shit is that we feel some collective societal catharsis from hearing about it. Mass shootings have become the modern, sanitized version of human sacrifice, with guns and media circuses assuming the role of knife and boulder.

I don't agree that it's some terrible thing to post a criminal's name. I think it's kind of absurd how we act like if we just don't mention They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, they'll stop storming Hogwarts. He doesn't "deserve" the credit for killing those people? He absolutely does. He did it, he, himself, and no one else. If the news actually gave a shit, they wouldn't *not* mention any names, they'd mention every victim's name *before* the killer's.

This guy needed attention long before anyone started blabbering about him on the tube, but it's not like a lack of raw attention is the ONLY problem this guy had. But rather than getting to the root of the problem in this lame-ass community-dearthed society of emotional katawas, we opt for the infinitely easier act of tut-tutting people not even related to the event. Which makes some sad sense because it is literally that much easier.

"Old media" never killed anybody. "Old media" doesn't "exist". That guy exists. That guy killed people. The worst part of this thread is when he killed those people.

Post gore to win thread.

I'm not decrying the fact that they mentioned his name, that would be an oversimplification, but rather how they reported his actions (or any other spree killer's). It's obvious the guy wanted a platform to spread his ideology, and network news gave him that platform, and in doing so have allowed mass shootings to become a new breed of mass communication.

It's been iterated time and time again by forensic psychologists like Park Dietz that the best way to prevent mass shootings is to keep the coverage as localized, or at the very least fact-based and dry, as possible, and not to make the death toll a headline (this is where jokes about "getting the high-score" come from, but they're not always jokes to the killers themselves). Doing so would at the very least, they speculate, not encourage copycat attempts, the likes of which we've already seen in the the time since the shooting in Oregon.

I think another big issue is that Americans no longer understand symbolic gestures. The guy didn't just kill innocent people to sate his "thirst for blood" or whatever, but rather to express something. It's the same with 9/11. It's easier to see events like that as "terrorists want to kill all of us because they hate our way of life!" rather than an attack on, drum roll please: world trade and globalization (which, to them, are synonymous with our way of life).

I also disagree that that guy exists any more than old media. They're both ideas. But I do agree that he probably needed more hugs and less of the medication he was probably on. But just like with terrorism, it's easier to blame the gun, or the mental illness, or the masculinity, or the Islam, or the videogames. Those things may of course contribute to our culture of violence (except videogames), but the fact that the media points the finger every which way but at themselves I think is cause enough for suspicion.

TL;DR: I wasn't pointing out the irony that CNN aired a press conference wherein the sheriff refused to name the killer, and then themselves named him. I was pointing out the irony that they showed this excerpt from his manifesto:
QuoteOn an interesting note, I have noticed that so many people like him are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more your're in the limelight.
And then proceeded to lionize him as a side-effect of their coverage.

I didn't post gore and I wasn't trying to "win the thread," so I don't know why you would insinuate that. It kind of hurts my feelings. I'm just upset that there isn't more outrage over the way mass shootings are presented. That said, this probably belongs in World news general.

Yeah, I noticed that. I thought it was kind of hilarious.

I was apparently being argumentative about a point that you weren't even aiming to debate, so, sorry about that.

I wasn't insinuating that, I was ending my post with a(n insensitive) joke because I consider this a more light/comedic thread. 99% of everything I post is a joke. I am a joke. Sorry.

Now somebody post a cringe video fast.

Bamyasi

Well I posted an entire cited textwall to argue a point that you weren't arguing to a point I wasn't making, so who looks stupid now!

Will anyone ever stop you valerie.

Idk if this is thread of bad worthy, sure they're a bit fat but they're pretty talented artists and idk if they have very poor defining features other than the fact they're not very attractive.
