Discuss. I find it ironic and believeable that the CEO wasn't arrested. Man, money can do amazing things.

i can't believe you would think that way..

it is a big deal whether or not you use it.. this is basically the government flexing its muscles and letting the world know they still have the power to take down major websites with or without SOPA. while megaupload can be held responsible for the content on its site because it physically hosts the data, they also did abide by takedown notices and tried to play by the rules. the shutdown of megupload means ANY file sharing site that you use or rely on could be down without notice. mediafire, rapidshare, 4shared, filestube, the list goes on.

That's odd, the article was rambling on about conspiracy charges and 50+ years in jail.

I'm not one to say 'fuck the police', but fuck bureaucracy.

there are other things at play here beyond how the site operated. i'm just saying that the site itself and how it was run has no grounds in being shut down for illegal operations.

Im having a pretty good time watching all the take down reports go through. Reminds me how those action sci fi novels from the 80's were terrible wrong about hacker attacks. It used to be lazars and deadly hacker attacks delivered via floppy disks, now its pissed off teenagers making a political stance.

naturally

see i thought that warner's abuse of megaupload's tools was a big deal, only to have them do that whole youtube thing and have warner take that down too even though they had no rights to it at all

but now that the site has been completely shut down i'm just that much more worried about the future of the internet and censorship in general

i don't even understand why people suck so much

I'm personally quite enraged by this not only because it's absolutely absurd, but also because megaupload was the website I used to distribute early beta versions of my albums

fuck you, united states govt.

Oh yeah, that reminds me.

I probably should've posted this months ago when it happened, but the FBI also took down this site:
http://tv-links.co.uk/

it had a big "F.B.I" stamp on it for a while until the domain expired.

Same with http://kino.to/
The text there basically says that the people who run kino.to have been arrested (kinox.to is up now and looks exactly the same though).

Either way, the reason why I am posting that is because those websites did NOT host files. They linked to files and from a purely bureaucratic point of view, that's not something one can get arrested for. Uploading and providing illegal things on your website is an active step against the law, having a website that distributes links but aside from that doesn't do anything is a passive step to sharing and passive sharing is not something one can usually get arrested for. Nevertheless, the creators of both websites I posted got arrested.

Fuckers! Not Megaupload!
What right does the FBI possess to shut down an entire website? To a big part it served as a legal tool of distribution for artists and other people... If I would count the legal shit that I downloaded via Megaupload in the past months, I would have quite a list. So how come an American organization terminates the access to data uploaded by people from all around the world? On a side note, of course Megaupload also used to be the website where I liked to get my other stuff (movies, music etc.) as it had always been reliable, fast and frequently used by most uploaders... This is quite a pain.

Well, it will probably end in most of said websites going abroad and starting over, although, kino.to was probably not an american wesite... Does the FBI actually have the right to operate internationally?

Here's a tip for the do-it-yourself crowd:
Go to your computer's Start menu, and either go to
"run" or just search for "cmd."
Open it up, and type in "ping [website address],"

Once you have the IP for a website, all you really
need to do is enter it like you would
a normal URL nd hit enter/press go. Typing in
"208.85.240.231"
should bring you to the front page of AO3,
for example, just as typing "174.121.194.34/dashboard"
should bring you straight to your Tumblr dashboard.
Since we're obviously bracing for the worst case scenario
which would involve you not being
able to access the internet regularly, you should, save this list.

Yeah I think he had a mansion or something there too. I knew megaupload was a big site, but I didn't know it was that big.

Not really, but they can put out warrants for arrest and pester the governments of other nations to hand over said criminals, kind of like what they did to New Zealand.

ZennyPLUS

My second question is, were these sites taken with due process by law? Because we all know how the Fed like to just bust and shut shit down before actually investigating.
