1. Chrono Trigger
2. FFIII snes
3. sonic cd
4. secret of mana
5. Terranigma

These are all good, Terranigma is an unappreciated gem.

As for me, I've always enjoyed the scores of the various Medal of Honor games.

like people have been saying, the legend of zelda for sure. i think majora's mask had the best soundtrack, mainly due to the song of healing.
final fantasy has a lot of good tracks
animal crossing has cool songs
i actually really like the music from mystical ninja: starring goemon

i don't know what else to put, i don't really play a lot of video games.

speaking of the LoZ games, i actually think that twilight princess or minish cap have the best soundtracks while majora has the most clever tracks.

minish being more brilliant based on the temples and environments and has that capcom charm, while TP has that grandiose orchestral quality. majora had incredibly clever mixes of OoT and brilliant temple midis, but they all sort of blended together in the end, and there were only 4 1/2 temples to really focus the score on... idk.

about hitman... the ambient submissive tracks are excellent, but they dont leave a final impact on the gameplay or the experience.

it has a similar feel to the timesplitters 2 music, but where the timesplitters 2 music was memorable and explosive, the hitman music was simply for ambience. the gameplay was what you were focused on, and it was great in the regards that you were not basing gameplay on rhythm, but on dynamic timing.

the timesplitters score was ambient, but it was heavily impactful on the actionpacked gun-happy FPS by keeping a solid 140-180bpm with flowing dynamics and string sections that dont feel forced, yet still keep you on your feet and in motion, and the music naturally falls into place.

hitman was just not a game where your meant to focus on the musical score and it succeeds in that regard.

BluPhoenix

except in the fact the score is supposed to build tension and fit the necessary action and not just go full blast streamline like timesplitters

and neither are rhythm games so why try to sync the action with the music aside from showing it off to someone watching

its not about syncing up. its about expressing energy in the appropriate mediums. as i stated previously, hitman is a game that requires ambiance and gripping soundtracks to keep the player entranced and on their toes, and the score does what its meant to. its just not memorable. its not the main focus of energy. thats the gameplay and story's job.

in closing, would you feel as excited playing doom, timesplitters, or contra with the television on mute?

BluPhoenix

there's a logical fallacy or 2 there because the focus of energy goes to the core gameplay in every game because it's what the player (and the developer) is focused on, and the ost is there to elicit emotion, and the central feel of play.

how can you say that hitman is a game about keeping a well-balanced soundtrack and keeping people on their toes then suddenly turn everything around like you're arguing with yourself

gameplay is the focus of energy. the audio should help build or maintain the initial feeling of that energy if its a game where the medium supports such energy.

for example, in most puzzle games you have more relaxing tracks until the game becomes intense, and you are in a "life or death" situation, the music reflects that, and instantly pushes you into a psychological state of panic. it usually stimulates more reflexive actions, and makes the final minutes of that specific puzzler more fun.

in hitman, its score is complete dark ambiance. its intense moments are almost always triggered by the player, never the music. the music is appropriate for it, as i said, but it doesn't keep anything energetic, which is also mildly appropriate given the stealthy subject matter.

"on your toes" wasn't a very good choice of words for hitman, i have to agree there ;). it is a very entrancing, pensive soundtrack though and isn't meant to be much more.

The Terminator SEGA-CD soundtrack: "Taking it to the Air"

also, now that I think of it, I can't think of any games with soundtracks fully done by commercial bands. I mean, there are some with a song or two, but a the full soundtrack? Anyone know any?
