i mean it never even had the ability to airblast before and had bonus damage and crits from behind so ofc every scrub pyro had it. now that it has airblast though i think it's less of a strictly 'f2p' weapon and more 'everyone uses this'. the original flamethrower isn't really even worth using anymore.

Originally yeah the backburner gave the pyro more health.
It also had no falloff so it usually did maximum damage no matter if you were just being lightly tickled by the flame or not.


It's had airblast since the hatless update.

Thats when they shoved a bunch of changes from the beta into the game, including the nerf to the Powerjack which I still can't find a logical explanation for.

the closest i ever got to figuring this out was when one of the developers posted saying "we have reasons for this" (this was also talking about the gunslinger crit change a few others that were up for a like.. a day) but never actually said what those reasons were
