Quote from: creamcornso duke nukem is a pretty good game i heard

depends entirely on what you expect from it

DN3D fans will be crying themselves to sleep because it's nothing like DN3D at all

most shooter fans will be frustrated by the fairly slow pace during the opening segments

there are a few parts that just aren't all that fun to go through, like when you constantly have to get gasoline for the monster truck (like in the demo)

on the flipside, there's a lot of silly little things to do, some pretty cool designs (octabrains and the cycloid emperor were my favorites) and you can drive a fucking FORKLIFT motherfucker, carmageddon style, for a few minutes

if you can play it for what it is, without expectations, it can be very enjoyable and fun, but if you're expecting the game of the century... you're not getting it

it has a lot of problems, but the most severe ones are stability and compatability issues which need to be patched
you're making it seem really terrible

like saying that a shitty double cheeseburger from mcdonalds off of the dollar menu is pretty good as long as you appreciate it for what it is, without expectations, and there are times that you'll get horrible ibs and you'll feel like shit after you eat it but it's still got some basic ingredients that can taste good i guess. you can throw the bun and that might be some fun

I'm saying it needs a patch to iron out the technical problems, and not to expect DN3D in HD. A lot of people put expectations into what the gameplay would be like, and were pissed off as a result because it wasn't the game they wanted it to be. People have pointed out some legit design flaws, such as the two-weapon limit restricting you to one offensive weapon if you choose to use the freeze or shrink rays... even though I only had issues with this once during the game, and it was just a little more challenging to pull off, not impossible.

Also, while that cheeseburger does involve rats and microwaves like DNF, comparing 3DRealms/Triptych to McD's just plain isn't RIGHT.

pc version seems to be getting a bit better reviews than console iterations

worthless

if they're not reviewing the PC version, they might as well not review it at all

http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/dukenuk...528/review.html

this review is far more reasonable

the difference between the two?

eurogamer guy seems to have been into the hype about how it would be the best game ever due to the development time, while the strategyinformer reviews it as he would any other game and even though he points out a lot of flaws he also thought the game was sort of fun (while also playing it on the PC)

billy

the eurogamer review mentions many other flaws in the game, as does nearly every credible publication. i will be very surprised if the metacritic scores do not plummet even lower in the next few days when the game is released in the great ol us of a

the fact that it's not funny should be enough of a sin

the game can only be considered at all good in an alternate dimension where no other games exist. fortunately we do not live in that universe, and we have games with better graphics, better gameplay, better humor, better music, better story. by today's standards what we have is a game that is budget quality at almost every level, priced at $50 because of what little steam the franchise has left from duke nukem 3d. (which does not hold up to today's standards either, bless your heart if you think otherwise)

all i'm saying is that everything in the eurogamer review reflects my experience with the demo, and your reasoning is sounding a bit like fanboy denial from over here but i'm glad you enjoy it and find your money to be well spent

i really am glad you're having fun but please don't try to get other people to waste 50 bones on a product that barely toes the line of mediocrity.

painkiller is better than duke nukem forever in nearly every way

Actually, I keep telling people to wait for a few patches to fix the technical bugs and the inevitable price slashes that will come from the god-awful reviews, mass cancelled pre-orders in the US and extreme drop in sales after the first week, or to just plain pirate it.

Reviews for the 360 version are a joke though, because consoles are a bad, console shooters are worse, and games ported from one to the other are more likely to be less junk when played on the original medium it was released for.

As an example, I fucking hated the steaming pile of dogshit that was Dead Space because I got the PC version, which was glitched and broken to fucking hell.

I haven't played it or anything, but generally speaking, basing your opinion off a demo isn't the strongest way to argue for something. I mean, in this case it's obvious that reviewers seem to think the same way, but still.

What I'm getting at is that anyone should play a game all the way through (or at least part way through) before deciding on how good it is. I had a huge debate with someone I know about this the other day (ironically, also in regards to DNF), but he didn't seem to get the difference.

Sinitron

Well, as far as playing it all the way through goes... the ending did suck. However I'm pretty sure it was intentional as Duke says "What kind of shit ending is this?" after the last cutscene, and says he'll be back for more.

everyone should just do what i do and if a video game looks good buy it if it doesn't don't

but what do i know i'm just a crab

i think the general consensus of DNF is that it is an average game with fun moments for fans of the series, but nothing near GOTY or a product worth 14 years of waiting (nothing would be). to me it doesn't sound like it's worth the full price, but i have a feeling it will be in the bargain bin before the end of this year.
