I honestly hate 3D. I'm tired of this crap.

3D is still developing but it's definitely the direction we're heading, though I'll admit the glasses are very silly. The only two movies I've seen in 3D have been Avatar and Tron, both in IMAX, but I wouldn't want to watch anything with production expenses as high as those two films any other way. I've heard 3D in regular theaters isn't all that exciting though. It really depends on the movie I suppose, and whether or not it was actually filmed in 3D. Though I have to agree that this "3D for the sake of 3D" has to stop, particularly in animated movies. At least there's always a 2D option.

Honestly I like 3D because when I go to the movies I'm not really looking for a piece of cinematic art all the time. Usually I'm just looking for spectacle and 3D gives me that.

I mean I'm sure if I was trying to be a serious animator like a lot of you are, I'd be irritated that every animated movie is in 3D and tries to use the effect just for the sake of it, so I understand where a lot of you are coming from. However, I just want to see some crap fly at my face.

what annoys me about them is that usually there's one little slow-mo thing with shit flying at the screen (tangled) shoved in there for absolutely no reason other than to make the film more like a theme park attraction

its happening with a lot of flicks and without the 3D factor it just looks fucking stupid

my only complaint with 3d is paying the extra money for it other than that i dont mind it if i dont want to see a movie in 3d i dont have to

3D is cool as long as it's not used as a gimmick or thrown in at the last second and actually makes the movie look worse (here's looking at you the last airbender)

MarcK

I saw tron in 3d on xmas and had a difficult time telling which shots were done in 2d or 3d except the obvious ones. I mean I guess it improved the shots some but ehh for the most part the effects were more compelling than the use of 3d.

I must say, Avatar did this gimmick good, I can tell Cameron put more emphasis on the effects than the plot, but still, it was enjoyable.

But yes, gimmick that will die next year, I betcha.

That's the problem though, more likely than not it is just a gimmick thrown in at the last minute. On top of that, movies that are not shot with 3D cameras and have 3D added as an afterthought tend to never look goo to begin with. While I will agree some movies do get it right, I'm just not a fan of it in general.

I go see it in 3d if I feel the effect of depth and space might enhance the experience like in UP or How to Train Your Dragon; the sky scenes feel like you are looking down into chasms and open air which was nice. Also stop-motion features in 3d is great because you tend to notice the physicality of the real puppets and environments more (i.e. Coraline and the nightmare before Xmas were great in 3D).

slack

every movie i saw in 3d was better in 2d

emanhattan

I can understand having a bit of the 3d experience (if you can call it that, since the movies already ARE in 3d) in animated movies but having it in live action movies is just idiotic.

I went to see UP in 3d and it actually did look kinda cool tho.

MarcK

I thought coraline was fine in 3d though, it helped it.

DrRumack

i wanna see a traditional cartoon in 3d just to see if that could actually be made convincing

iirc coraline was the first film to be in reald3d. i think it helped its box office numbers as well

GhostingFish

Now its like every movie with good cg is being put in 3d. I bet they dont even use duel-cameras to get debth prospective. I think is something neat but not useful.
