Entertainment / Re: Sonic 2 HD Alpha Demo

Turns out this fangame has DRM. Yes, a Sonic fangame of all things has DRM. For those who don't know (probably all of you), Sonic Retro (the site this fangame was founded on) originated as a rom hacking site and Sonic 2 HD began as a community project in 2008. The fact this game has really horrid DRM has caused a ton of drama on the site and it turns out the programmer of the game is a total douchebag that held this game's progress hostage. You can read about that guy's faggotry in this Sonic Retro editorial and some programmer's blog who did the coding for Sonic Fan Remix.* The first link also explains some history from the project and why the game is detected as a virus on a lot of anti-virus software (hint: the god awful DRM). Drama on Sonic Retro is always fucking hilarious, especially now that people are hacking Sonic 2 HD and mocking the game's bloated programming.

*This is Sonic Fan Remix:

Yes, both Sonic Fan Remix and Sonic 2 HD remade Emerald Hill. I don't understand why that level is so popular. -_-

This fan project is amazing and alpha demo is finally out. Everyone here who likes the Genesis games should play this. FYI, you have to right click on the title screen to access the controller support menu and I recommend looking at the manual. After beating the game, make sure to hold B (or S if you're using the keyboard) on the title screen and then hit start (or enter if you're using the keyboard) to access an awesome surprise. Also, some advice from one of the people behind the project for those having issues with the game.

Quote from: Canned KarmaWe've had plenty of people telling us that Microsoft Security Essentials is reporting that the .exe is a trojan. Rest assured it's a false positive.

If anyone is experiencing technical problems with black screens/not loading/etc., please look at the readme PDF we included. It has a list of some basic things we found before release.

Right analog stick camera control was added, the soundtrack is the Japanese version, custom graffiti was removed for some odd reason, and the textures still look "blocky". Keep in mind that modders could always add the American soundtrack to the PC version of the game and trust me, they will.

Quote from: rtil on March  1, 2012 02:12 AMum, while it is true you cannot customize the controls, there are 3 video filter options in sonic CD and one of them is the sharper look called "nostalgia"

Nostalgia isn't as sharp as it should be. Pretty much any 2D game I play on an emulator looks sharper. That comparison is nostalgia vs. what it look before it became a port of a port.

Me too. Sega has a mixed history with their PC versions mostly because they usually made something for a console, then port it over to PC instead of working on all the versions at once. For the Sonic CD port, that engine was originally made by Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, a person who originally made that engine for a fangame project. While he handled the final iOS and Android versions, SEGA handled the console and PC versions. The PC version should've looked a lot sharper and give people customizable controls, but SEGA didn't do that even though it was in the original engine. Why? The PC version was ported from the console version, which was ported from PC. Here's his proof that it was SEGA's fault the final version didn't look sharper and have customizable controls.

*sighs*

Edit-

Best to look at it in a direct link. [LINK]

It's releasing for PSN, XBLA, and PC. Totally getting it on PC unless it's a shoddy port.

Pretty much. A video of me filming my mom's cat opening a Christmas present has over a thousand views.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDt30M81kb8

Considering all the effort Gaven put into his video, the amount of views from his video is kind of a joke. Some other video uploaded from that channel has 217 views and yet it had a ton of effort put into it.

Hence what this guy did.

Also, Gavin's video is amusing but too bad it doesn't even have 10,000 views.

Quote from: rtil on January 22, 2012 09:28 PMi think the effect is overexaggerated though. many people who pirate things never had the intention of purchasing the item anyway, so i don't think i'd count it as a lost sale. if they couldn't pirate the item and had the option between buying it and not having it at all, i think most would settle for the latter.
I agree it's over exaggerated and one of the most difficult aspects of piracy is knowing how much it hurts and helps sales. MW3 was massively pirated for example, but a lot of people might have done it simply to test whether or not the game is playable on their PC since there isn't a demo. Considering how a lot of people bought Sonic Generations only to find out it doesn't work on their computer, I don't blame a lot of people for pirating games without demos. Sonic Generations has a demo now though. I think piracy probably hurts mainstream music artists more than anyone else when it comes to things like album sales but they make so much money anyways from both sales and concerts that it's hard for me to be extremely sympathetic.

Quote from: logen on January 21, 2012 08:47 PMAnd as a whole: Imho, sales of any kind are not affected by piracy. Whoever thinks that, is a fucking idiot. People who pirate, either buy the stuff later, or are the kind who would not pay for anything from the start, even if they couldn't get it illegally. The industry needs to be punched in the face, and it needs to realize, that most stuff they make sucks, and the consumers simply got bored of this. Hence the decline of sales.
Piracy definitely effects sales. There are albums I would have definitely bought in the past if I never became a music pirate. But as you brought up, it can also increase sales for certain artists since it allows people to discover music they might have never discovered otherwise.

The only games I pirate are rom files which is partially because I prefer playing older games in emulators more than anything else. I use Steam all the time and have bought a ton of games through it. Very fantastic service and I love giving Gabe my money. >_> When it comes to entertainment like movies and TV shows, I rarely watch those forms of media outside of South Park for new episodes and election related coverage so I don't have much of a reason to pirate those form of media very often.

With music, I am a dirty pirate. Ever since I started pirating music back in 2008, the only albums I've bought are two albums by Secret Chiefs 3 which is an indie artist I would have never gotten into if it weren't for piracy. Music piracy vastly expanded my musical tastes. I used to be so closed minded about music and didn't listen to music very much because I didn't want to spend such ridiculous prices. Now I listen to music all the time and that would have never happened if it weren't for piracy. It should be noted that I do buy band shirts and one of the shirts I own is something I wouldn't have ever bought if it weren't for piracy.

I would like to support the music industry more but nothing can compete with the awesomeness known as What.CD. >_> I can download so many different editions of the same album in usually any format I want. Absolutely nothing that has come out has features like that. There's also just no real benefit to owning music legally unless you own a physical copy. I live in a small house with space issues, I don't need anymore CDs. Another thing worth bringing up is that I listen to barely any indie artists and rarely go to concerts because most of the artists I like are either dead, their band broke up, or they don't play live anymore. That, and most of the major concerts in California are in the bay area, near LA, and or near San Diego. I don't live anywhere near those areas.

I must say, depends entirely on the artist. >_> For some reason, SEGA's American marketing back in the early to mid '90s thought scrapping the Japanese artwork in favor of ugly, horrible artwork would be more business savvy.

I don't get it either. Thank god they stopped doing that with later titles...though the later titles didn't have the best artwork either.

Hmm... Well, I just hope that was a technical error and not purposeful censorship. :/ While I'm disappointed Ron Paul didn't get first, Paul, Romney, and especially Santorum did very well tonight. Rick Santorum's victory was a major shocker. Also, rofl @ this tweet from Ron Paul's campaign.
